It's a scam. He can see you the next week paying in cash if he is legit. For a Craiglist buy or sell I would only do that in person.

It's a scam the check will be no good and he will want you to give him the money in cash and the bank will return the check and you will be out the money!

Definitely scam. One thing that pops up regularly is that the check will be for more than the agreed price, so a refund of the excess will be requested -- and, as noted, by time a bad check is caught and returned it will be too late. Another thing to watch out for: issuance of a "certified" money order. Believe it or not, USPS (at a local branch) is one of the best places to check on authenticity of a money order -- even banks need to wait for processing to determine if it's good or bad.

Yes, this is a scam. I had a piece of furniture I was selling in craigslists and received a response almost exactly like this. At first, I thought it was real. He was out of town on business but would send someone to pick up the item and transport it to his home. He sent me a cashier's check for several hundred dollars OVER the asking price. I took it to my credit union and the teller thought it looked suspicious. It was fake. I turned it over to the US Postal authorities but never heard any more about it.

I sell things on craigslist often but I never sell to anyone that will not meet me in a very public place OR pay in advance on PayPal and I will ship it to them. The price point at which the above scam is triggered is around $200. I have never received it for any item below that amount and almost always receive some variation of the scam above $200.

Received almost the identical routine while in the process of selling my car. The “buyer” agreed to the price & offered an additional $50 to pull the ad which was 24 hrs after the ads inception. Big mistake & hats off to Auto Trader for reposting it with no charge.
I then received an email from the buyer that he had to cancel the FedEx check he sent because it had the ‘wrong’ zip code even though he knew it was right. He reissued payment by regular mail. I received a ‘certified’ Bank of America check for 4K more than advertised. I took it to a branch office & while they acknowledged that ‘Consolidated Medical Services Inc’ in Hunt Valley, MD was one of their customers, they would not honor it & in fact acted as if I was a scammer.
It’s a jungle out there, so be careful.

Total scam. been there. Buyer issued a "cashier's check" for more than purchase price. I never cashed it, since that showed it was a scam. It almost worked because he used a reputable religious school as an address.

Definitely a scam. I had the same thing happen to me. I let them send the check then took it to the bank and they ran a back trace on the check and found that it was a check already processed . Don't know how they got hold of the check, but my bank called the company that originally wrote the check and they confirmed that the check had already been deposited and cleared. I believe they started there own internal investigation. I told the potential buyer that I knew it was a fraudulent check and never heard from them again. I turned everything I had over to the authorities . Haven't heard anymore since. Thankfully my bank was extremely helpful. Good luck.

I had the same scam tried on the sale of my motorcycle a few years back. I guess these scams work enough times and there are enough gullible people that they keep being used over and over.
