My statement was intended to be very broadly directed and a little bit facetious also.

It was a new lens.
A new lens then you should return it for another one. You shouldn't have to use any thing more than just your hands. If you use pliers they may say the damage made by you and you can't either return nor have it fixed under warranty.
Of course unless you turned the cap in the wrong direction which you would have known by now.

Maybe that's why it's not working.

Although the OP said it's his new lens I guess it's a used lens? Can the OP confirm this?
No offense meant but for the life of me I can't see that it would make a bit of difference where he got the lens or whether it is new or used. It seems the problem is getting off the rear lens cap. I wonder if he might be turning it the wrong way.

Thanks for all the answers. I do not need any other comments. Lens already shipped and a replacement ordered.

Such inane threads die verrrry slowly.
I dont expect that bit of good news to silence the parrots.
BTW, lens caps are cheaper at CVS and incudes a large supply of vitamins, or asprin, etc, etc at no extra charge (see pic below).

Yeah, but we're all having such a good time making comments. BTW, I think your choice to return the lens was the right one. Good luck with the replacement.

If the lens is new the lens cap should come off easily if not it's defective and the OP should return it. If used and perhaps no warranty the OP may have to find out what wrong with it. Many suggestions about the turning direction but it is not it. The OP returned it as he said in the post just below yours. For the brand new lens one shouldn't try to force it while for an old lens one might have to.

Is it a "Nikon" rear cap?
I've actually had some issues with used kit that shipped with third party rear caps.

Please do not use vise-grips or any other metal tool.
Instead put on a pair of latex dish washing gloves... they will give you all the traction you need...

Personally I would never purchase an optic with a plastic lens mount (but that's just me).

NIKON Lenses are not LEFTY LOOSEY. NIKON Lenses have Left handed threads. As the rear cap is facing you turn it CLOCKWISE to loosen. And the only kit lenses (Plastic mount) lenses I have came with a rear cap that just pushed on and was a friction fit.
