No. That would just call attention to it. I doubt thieves are looking for specific brands. Any DSLR would make a good sale on the black market. TV shows often cover the name because they don't want to give the company free advertising.

It would be funny to see someone wearing the large "NIKON" strap with the camera name taped over.

Now what about putting a lower end camera brand over the real one. Wouldn't that deter the thieves? 🤔

In my opinion, NO, it would not deter the thieves. Thieves would steal it anyway. What a lot of trouble for nothing. The key is to be aware of surroundings to begin with and take care of your equipment.

Thief: "Dang, I thought I was stealing a Canon and all I got was a Nikon."

I suppose it could happen. Insert any brand name where it suits what you like. It won't matter to anyone other than as an amusement.

Nice idea but. That is why I have insurance. If someone decides to take my old stuff, I get new stuff

Do you cover (ie gaffer tape) your camera brand when shooting or traveling?

It's easy to recognize which brand of camera it is without the brand name. Much easier than which model it is within the brand.

If you cover the name with tape wouldn't that be a clue to thieves you were trying to hide the name of an expensive camera? Unless everyone covered the name of their camera, including covering "No-Name Special," then putting a piece of tape over a major brand name would be announcing, "I'm trying to hide the name of this expensive camera."

INMO, cameras, like their owners, are targets of opportunity. Thieves see, they take, and decide later how to get rid of it. Or not.

Stealing has always been a way of redistributing full-frame cameras to the masses.

Why did you think it was stupid? Did it interfere with your photography?

Really? The tape is a dead give away that you are trying to hide something. How about a solid strap?

I am not concerned about thieves. I just don’t like to be bothered by gear-geek questions. I have insurance for my cameras.
