Do you cover (ie gaffer tape) your camera brand when shooting or traveling?

No.
But I haven't gone to any nefarious places yet.

I never do nor can I understand why I would want to. Thieves will steal even cheap camera equipment to sell. What is the point of covering the name of the camera?

They'll probably go after the camera brand(s) with greater notoriety so they can get more money for them.

No! I don't use my cameras as prop for the movie.

Yes, of course but I have carried Nikons and Leica's all across Europe and here in America and Mexico with never a problem. I get what you are saying but thieves will steal any camera if the owner makes it easy enough.

Yup, some money is better than no money.
But I'll bet there is a preference!

Of course. And I bet you are correct on both items.

Did it once for a trip --
realized it was stupid then peeled the tape off

Three people, one with a Leica, one with a Canon and the third with no markings. Wouldn’t the one with no markings be the lowest priority to go for?

Why did you think it was stupid? Did it interfere with your photography?

I get what you are trying to point out and have no problem with it. Of course you are correct. But while I have spent more than enough time, about 30 years, with the criminal element I cannot always predict what they are going to do. Of course your point is valid. But consider, in my scenario there is only me and my camera is not marked. Thieves will always go for the target of easiest opportunity. So would you and I. I doubt they would say to themselves, No, let's not take that camera because we don't know what it is. Let's wait for an hour or so and maybe a Leica or Canon will show up. Generally speaking they will also think, Someone who owns a cheap camera would not bother to hide the brand name.

Glad to hear from you. Believe me, I do not disparage your comment in the least bit. I am sure there are more than enough thieves for all of our equipment and more than enough easy targets that you and I would be safe with ours. Common sense is always the key.

To thieves, probably not. They would think that someone is covering up a Hasselblad with tape. Thieves aren't stupid.
