Those are truly amazing shots Molly. I thought the older ones ate the babies. Interesting to see one babysitting. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.

Thank you. And yes, the older ones do eat the babies. Mom knows when they are big enough to be a threat to the little ones and will run them off. Usually that will not be for about 3 or 4 years.

I came upon a large clutch of baby Gators today and saw the most amusing thing. There was a yearling Gator, probably the only survivor from the last clutch, who was acting as 'Baby Sitter'. The little ones were all trying to get on top of big brother at the same time! The only thing is, he didn't have as much room as Mom does. The clutch had about 30 babies. Mom stayed close by but they wanted to be with 'Bro'. So many of them would climb on top that he would fall off of the log. He would get back up only to be covered again. The babies were struggling to all get on top of him and pushing each other out of the way. I really enjoyed watching them!

I had the pleasure of shooting a bunch in Blue Spring Park. We were there too early for the Manatees, but the gators! Your pics are a hundred fold nicer than mine.

Alligators are quite abundant in Florida with an estimated 1.5, by FWC count. (Although I saw a special on Animal Planet that said Florida had a estimated 1.3 BILLION ! There is no way!)
Thank you for looking and for your kind comments.

I read they are still babies up to four feet long. At that size they have to fend for themselves.

That's about right. After that Mom stops looking after them. They sometimes stay in the general vicinity of her and she will allow it as long as they do not become aggressive with the new little ones.
