There was a media article regarding Nikon's withdrawal of SLR development. This media article is only speculation and Nikon has made no announcement in this regards. Nikon is continuing the production, sales and service of digital SLR. Nikon appreciate your continuous support.

This is from the NikkeiAsia article, which is corroborated by the rather precise and limiting language of Nikon's official statement:

From now on, Nikon intends to focus on digital mirrorless cameras, but production and distribution of existing SLR models will continue.

https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Business-trends/Nikon-to-stop-making-SLR-cameras-and-focus-on-mirrorless-models

For some this might represent the end of western civilization as they have known it. Others will adapt and thrive into the future.

Sony kills the DSLR.
Canon kills the DSLR.
Gee, I wonder where we are headed? It's a rhetorical question.

If as expected dSLR cameras find their demise those like me, so called dinosaur, will keep what we have. I know that others will sell to buy mirrorless, it is a choice.
In my case I am as comfortable shooting with a dSLR as I am with mirrorless but I recognize the advantages of a mirrorless camera, in my case Olympus bodies. They are smaller, usually lighter, small prime and zoom lenses of excellent quality and the cameras and a couple of lenses fit easily in a small bag that is easy to carry anywhere. I will not talk about quality, I can only say I get superb enlargements from my 17 Mp. cameras.

Right now it is a fact that a majority of professionals are using mirrorless. It is also a fact that mirrorless cameras sell very well. It is the new trend and it makes no sense to continue to make cameras that many photographers are not buying, like it was the case of the point and shoot.
I am sure Canon and Nikon will continue to sell and serve their present dSLR cameras but both companies have already announced their intentions of stopping R&D with new models. From an economic standpoint it makes no sense to continue to produce cameras that are not selling well.

I am using Olympus cameras with Olympus and Panasonic lenses to my entire satisfaction. I am sure others, using other mirrorless cameras are as happy as I am.

Mirrorless craze will fade in favor of cell phone cameras. Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Sony, and several others will dominate. AI will make most hardware superfluous.

Guess I'm a dinosaur because on my car I don't have lane assist, adaptive cruise control or automatic braking. Wonder how much longer Illinois will allow me to renew my driver's license. Everyone must know not having that makes me a real threat on the highway. But right now my automobile as well as my DSLR's take me exactly where I want to go and surely will for many more years. I don't confuse the definition of the two words, need and want.

It's an obvious move...probably a few years late.

Nikon simply does not have the revenue to stick with both Dslr's and mirrorless.

Something has to give...and it's not going to be mirrorless.

My Nikon D3s will take on and win anyone willing to put up their mirrorless against me in a battle of landscape photography.

The irony is that the more any photographer depends on post processing of raw files to achieve his final result, the less he needs or can truly take advantage of any new camera technogy. His camera is really just a box with a hole on one side for a lens. This is true not only for mirrorless cameras, but also for the last and best of the DSLRs. Be honest...have you really seen any meaningful, incremental improvement in images posted here over the last four or five years?

This is not true. Fake News, so to say. This is an announcement made by Nikon on July 12

Grief is typically conceptualized as a reaction to death, though it can occur anytime reality is not what we wanted, hoped for, or expected. Persistent, traumatic grief can cause us to cycle (sometimes quickly) through the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance.

Exactly my situation and how I feel. My car is 7 years old and still gets me where I need to go. It has less than 40 K miles on it. My DSLR's are 3-10 years old and still get me the photo's i want and expect. I am 79 years old. Don't really need or want anything newer
