I bought a D5300 with 5 clicks on the shutter. The number that shows is the actual number of clicks - no resetting.

You don't keep your words. Your words are meaningless now.

Don’t think those were shutter clicks. Just photo numbers on a newly formatted card.
That’s correct I just numbers on a new card

I just purchased a Nikon D500 from Nikon as a refurbished. I have made other purchases from the refurb bin and have been very happy.

I am happy this time as well, though I did not get a manual; yes I can download the PDF. The camera looks perfect in every regard.

I have only taken a few sample photos and when I checked, there were shutter clicks 001, 002, 003. etc.

I wouldn't be particularly upset if Nikon reset the shutter counter; the camera is new to me. Decades ago, before this was made illegal, some used car dealers did this with odometers with that as the argument.

But I think it is possible that there really weren't any shutter clicks. Earlier discussions of the origins of the refurbished stock suggests that this might be the case.

Does anyone have any insight one way or the other on this? Just curious.

I am upgrading from a D7100, which I have really liked, and I must say that the D500 is feature rich! I noted an option for it to remind me of my wife's birthday, for example.

FYI, I take the pdf files of manuals to Kinko’s/Fedex and have them printed (8.5 X 11) and spiral bound. Cost is approx $15-20, depending on the number of pages. Love them because the pages lay flat.

I heard from people who had their camera's shutter replaced they said Nikon doesn't reset the counter.

I sent in the D750 I am still using when they recalled it four or five years ago due to a shutter box that caused a ghosting effect. They replaced the shutter box and totally reconditioned the camera with new leather and a through cleaning so that when I got it back it looked and worked like a new camera. They did not however reset the shutter count even though it was a new shutter.

I think you really need to ask Nikon.
Personally I would not have a problem with shutter count being reset to zero if the shutter had been replaced as that's all shutter count is-- the number of actuations of a mechanical part. - even though there is some wear on things like the mirror mechanism. But I have no Idea how Nikon actually handles it.

Most likely the shutter box was replaced but as has been pointed out, camera companies do not reset the shutter count so it is quite possible the camera does have that many activations.

A refurbished camera with zero clicks probably indicates that it was sent to a dealer and then returned without being opened. I too have had good luck with most refurbs except a Nikon D7200 from B&H that came with 28,000 clicks. Too many for me, so I returned it at ended up with a D7500 refurb which, to my surprise, had zero clicks.

I'm perplexed...I know I haven't taken 369, 017 pictures or shutter actuations since getting this refurbished D500.

As for the cameras refurbished by Nikon with very low shutter actuations, I wonder what Walmart did with their display cameras when models changed? I remember looking at them and as long as the battery was charged up, you could shoot images, although without cards, they weren’t saved.

I also remember seeing some of the cameras or lenses damaged, no doubt by club fisted idiots that knew nothing about the knob or lever they were cranking around on.

If they were returned to Nikon, I could see them repairing them and the cameras could easily have a few hundred clicks. I remember comparing Nikon and Canon cameras with a zoom lens, focusing on different things around the store. I probably fired each one 10-12 times.

To my knowledge, Nikon does not reset shutter counts. Even after shutter replacements.

I heard the opposite, that the only time Nikon DOES reset the shutter IS when they replace it. What sense does it make to have a NEW shutter mechanism but with a bunch of "clicks" already on it?

My only experience buying a refurb was when I bought my D7100 on Amazon during a "Black Friday" sale. The seller was Adorama. The shutter count on the first image I took with it was "699". I'd read that anything under 2000 is considered new and not yet "broken-in".

Shutter count and the image or frame number are two different things. There is a procedure you have to go through to get actual shutter count. Frame or image number will recycle every 10,000 shutter actuations, but the total shutter count continues.
