MACRO , WHAT IS REQUIRED?

Good evening all, names Terry [77yrs] from Plymouth U.K.very much interested in Macro , but struggling at the moment with focusing the subject .as the old eyes are about shot hi.Looking for some method of lighting the subject with a ringflash or o flash or whatever that stays on to make focusing easier please
Have a Pentax K-r with a Sigma 50mf2.8 Macro lens, tripod and a 2X Converter. LENS AND CONVERTER are Manual.Would you start off with just the Lens or add the Converter? Hope to get a slide of some sort to make focusing easier, but lack of light is my main concern .Thank you for allowing me on the Forum, any advice much appreciated Regards Terry [tickover]

Saw a fellow one time shooting dragon flies and other insects - shooting with a Nikon. Had Nikon's wireless R200 strapped around his knee as well as two on the camera. Don't knwo the possibilities with your camera, I'm a Nikon shooter. But, consider the idea

Anyway manual focus is the way I shoot macro. Use the lens with out the 2x on it. The 2x will cut the amount of light that makes it through the lens to the sensor or film.

Hi Terry, It sounds like you may want a "always on" ring light. Yongnuo makes a couple of these models. I have a Yongnuo flash, and it is a wonderful system for my Canon. With a "always on" ring light you don't have to worry about compatability issues, just a sizing ring for your specific lens. Ring lights come with a variety of sizing rings that fit in the filter threads on the lens. You may have to get a bit close using your 50mm lens (min distance 7.4in) for bugs without them fleeing in fright. You will need a tripod using this lens, since it does not have optical stabilizer or OS to compensate for camera shake.

Hi Bill Thanks for all the info about the Yongnuo and will look it up , Bill if i put my 2X converter on will i be able to be further away from the subject and still focus Thank again Terry
