I have read that many people use a relativly inexpensive alternative to branded macro RING lighting kits. Some involve inexpensive LED lights w/battery powe packs. Does anyone know of a commercially available setup that can be attached to the front of my macro lens like a conventional ring light ?

I just bought this unit and it seems like a good deal. Its an Amaron, Halo, ring flash, made in China. Sits right on your lens. Has adapters which screw into your lens just like some filters. The kit comes with ALL different size adapters. You can use flash or continuous light for video. Seems to work fine. You set the intensity of the light you want.

check out the O Flash Ring i love mine it uses the flash on your hot shoe
Yes it is made in China so its not exactly top notch plastics , bricks and mortar but for about $25.00 you cant go wrong !! you can see it on the equipment info page of the macro forum Nikonian 72 uses it and has pics and info on how to modify it and improve its mounting to your cam . Sure its not a $ 750.00 unit from a major manufacturer but it does an incredible job plus think what you can do with the extra cash !!!

I did give you a name (sort of) It should have said Aputure Amaron. Also sending a link to "the Camera Store", hopefully it works. Copy and paste the URL

If you already have a speedlight these work rather well. http://www.ebay.com/itm/F160-Macro-O-Flash-Ring-CANON-550EX-580EX-II-400D-450D-/220602125554?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item335ce94cf2

Nikonian72 does most of his shots with one of these.

You might want to consider this http://www.ebay.com/itm/140833173236?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 - as quite versatile.

I use a Lester Dine ring/point light. They have a popsitionable point light attached to a ring light that fits the front of your lens. This is the company that "invented" the ring light for Dental inter oral photograhy. They can be bought new from the Dine Co., but can also be found used on eBay... I posted a photo of all of my macro gear awhile backl 7 it showed my 3 Dine ring lights as well as my 'O' flash

Holy crap, do you need someone to come to your house and lead you by the hand down to the local camera store, or to your nearest computer keyboard? This is the kind of crap inquiry that has caused me to give up on visiting this blog.

Here's a novel suggestion: TYPE "O-RING CAMERA LIGHT" into your favorite search engine and then pick from the thirty or fifty or five thousand entries listed there!
