Should have bought Windows !!! IMHO
In fact the reason my machines are using Windows is because of my choice of soft ware only runs on Windows otherwise I would be moving to Linux, tried it on an old laptop, fine but cannot run my photo software so I'm stuck.

Bummer! It's not supported by the Mac.

OTOH, the things that I used to do in IrfanView because it was so fast loading and easy to use, I now do in Photoshop because the M1 chip makes it so fast to load and easy to use.

My system is not that fast but since most of what I do besides reading mail and the hog is photo related, I generally (always) have ACDSee and Affinity Photo loaded and ready to go at all times.

Trade it? You mean as in getting rid of something? That's ridiculous. My motto is "Never get rid of anything."

I have noticed that if I import into IRF from LR ... the color profile changes for the worse... a tad.

I use it now mainly to quickly downsize the image for online...

I would like to add that in the "Information" tab at the very end of the Exif Info section, is a listing called "Total Pictures" which in fact is your total shutter actuations for the camera at the point of that frame.

Correct, but the camera must provide that information. Not all do.

I have been using both Irfanview and FastStone for years. Both are great programs and much, much easier to use than PS or LR. Admittedly they won't do everything that the others will do but they will do most of it, enough for an old duffer like me.

If you've never used Irfanview, you owe it to yourself to give it a try. It's free, so you have nothing to lose. When you download it, get the plugins, and you'll be able to see lots of data about the image on your screen. Press I for some and press E for more. It can do so much that I wouldn't begin to list everything here. My three main uses are viewing images, checking EXIF data, and eliminating unwanted things in images. Using Edit > Show paint dialog, I can quickly and easily remove unwanted elements. I find it much easier to use than LR for this.

Yes, it is an odd name, but it's the first name of the developer, Irfan Skiljan.

I've been using it with pleasure for many years but recently replaced it with the FastStone that offers more editing functions when there is no time to open Lightroom. FastStone allows editing of raw (NEF) files and saving them as jpg.

I have used Irfanview since 2000 and if at all possible, I will never be without it. I make it my default so that the instant I open a picture, it is already in Irfanview, ready to edit. I do about everything I want to do with it including replacing backgrounds.

I use either Elements or Affinity for editing, but Irfanview is my default viewer. Quick and provides lots of info about the image.

I like IrfanView and used it a lot on Windows. I have never tried to replace a background in IrfanView. Is there a tutorial telling how to do that?

I'm a big fan of Irfanview, too. Not so much for processing photos as for two other tasks:

1) Quick review of photos straight out of camera, first cut before using Lightroom.
2) Batch resizing of largish JPGs. Very easily done.

3) Adding text to the image
4) Adding arrows and/or dots to the image
5) Producing contact sheets and printing several images at one time (handy on my duplex printer).

FastStone allows viewing the embedded jpg in a raw file. I don't believe it will produce edits using the raw data. You're editing the jpg.

Many people have stated that FastStone will edit a raw file. I have not been convinced. Editing the raw data to produce a useful image requires the definition of several parameters (the most obvious parameter is the white balance).

Yes, you can view a raw file and edit what you see. But you're not using the raw data. If you are editing your photos with FastStone, you have no reason to shoot raw.

I believe the same comment applies to IrfanView.

I use Adobe Bridge with Affinity Photo on my Mac. You can download Bridge for free and set it to open photos directly from a double click on the preview image.
