If you've never used Irfanview, you owe it to yourself to give it a try. It's free, so you have nothing to lose. When you download it, get the plugins, and you'll be able to see lots of data about the image on your screen. Press I for some and press E for more. It can do so much that I wouldn't begin to list everything here. My three main uses are viewing images, checking EXIF data, and eliminating unwanted things in images. Using Edit > Show paint dialog, I can quickly and easily remove unwanted elements. I find it much easier to use than LR for this.

Yes, it is an odd name, but it's the first name of the developer, Irfan Skiljan.

Totally agree. I've been using it for around 25 years. Recently (past few years) have been using FastStone, which is similar, almost as robust. Both have a ton of features that are too numerous to list. I can't imagine anyone into digital photography doesn't know about and use one or both of these so called "viewers" that do so many things. Primarily though I use ACDSee for viewing all the photo data and cataloging, and Affinity Photo for editing. If I want to resize a photo quickly and easily I sometimes use one of these, but for any editing heavy or light, I see no downside to using a full blown editor like Affinity or PS.

I too have been using IrfanView since the '90s.

Bummer! It's not supported by the Mac.

OTOH, the things that I used to do in IrfanView because it was so fast loading and easy to use, I now do in Photoshop because the M1 chip makes it so fast to load and easy to use.

I've used Irfanview for years, and can recommend it highly! My usage is viewing and EXIF. And he keeps improving it.

IrfanView is worth loading into your Windows machine. It's a great viewer. FastStone came out maybe a decade later and it's also a great viewer. Neither of them stands up to a real editor.

Both IrfanView and FastStone will handle raw files. HOWEVER they do not use the raw data, only the embedded jpg preview. So if you shoot raw, there is no advantage to using either IrfanView or FastStone as anything but a viewer.

Right. You can do some very basic editing - like exposure - but it's very basic.

Two options:
Use Photoshop. With the M1, it loads as fast as IrfanView. And does more.
Use a Windows emulator on your Mac.

I don't like either of those options. I'll stand pat. But thanks

I use Irfanview on a PC and Imagemagick on a Linux server. Both have more options than I'll ever understand how to use.

I've been using Fast Stone for years. I browse my RAW images and import them to PS for editing and saving as jpg. The RAW and edited images get saved in folders on my dedicated internal SSD for photos.
My system - it works for me.

It doesn't take up much space on the hard drive, is very fast, opens and resizes about any kind of image. I've used IrfanView for decades and will continue to do so.
