My all around lens is 24-200 FX for my Nikon Z. It has just enough wide angle to make it useful. I had the 28-300 but don't like to use the Z adaptor and sold it. My other Z lens is 14-30, which is a bit short for an everything lens. I don't walk around with it but carry it around.

Interesting question, but what camera will this walk-around lens be used on, Nikon?

If Nikon look at the 70-300mm AF-P lens.

On an FX body, that would be the equivalent of a 105-450 field of view. Not my idea of a walk-around lens, which would have to include a wide angle for my uses.

I use the newer version of Nikon 18-300mm for inspection work and it is truly all-purpose with respect to focal length. I've used Nikon/Canon/Sigma versions and this is the first that doesn't have issues with the lens barrel sliding out when you shoot downward.

But such lenses have no artistic value in my experience. The images have no life and can't compete with a 40 year old prime. There is simply too much glass and too much sacrifice in the name of less artistic lens characteristics.

In short, if you want to document a travel experience it is fine but I wouldn't use it for anything that I would hang on my wall.

With all due respect does it make any difference what camera it is? The OP said an FX lens. Would not ANY FX camera fit the discussion?

Dennis

Well, it was my mistake initially not saying which brand or DSLR the lens was for.

I just realized you are asked about FX lenses. If I had to pick an all-purpose FX lens it would be the 24-70mm.

The 70-300mm kit lens is too long as a solo touring lens which is why it comes with an 18-55.

If it were me, I would probably go with either the Sigmaa 24-105mm or the Nikkor 24-120mm f/4.

Nice range of focal lengths, reasonable size. Great glass.

I appreciate that information. I have the 24-70mm and the 70-200mm but I wanted a lens that covered that minimum length down to 24mm and below 200mm and I think the 24-120mm will do the job.

Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED Vibration Reduction Zoom Lens

Lens is archived (as is the 70 - 300) but if you can find one used/refurbished it is worth your look. Sharp on both ends.

Alright. But I am still wondering what difference it makes. FX is FX isn’t it for all FX lenses? Canon, Nikon, whatever,

Okay, I get that. I guess what I'm looking for in a fairly wide range FX zoom is the need to not have to carry several lenses when out just shooting for fun or in those situations where I'm just trying to capture the moment.....family pool parties, family gatherings or just a lens that will stay on the DSLR when I'm just riding around town if I'm making any sense.

I relax my expectations and use the older Tamron 28-200 XR lens only available used - About $100 WORKS !

The very best wide zooms are for the Canon Nikon and Sony mirror less 24-240 and 24-200.

The difference it makes is in what OEM lenses might apply and are available .....

From my understanding that's correct as long as the lens was designed for a particular manufacturer.
