As a first book, I would shy away from the technical aspects of photography. A 13-15 yo knows how to take pictures very well, probably better than grandpa. The smartphones today and ILC cameras in auto mode make good exposures automatic. I would suggest a book or videos teaching the elements of composition and lighting. That will get them taking better images faster that learning the technicals, which today's cameras can do automatically. I would recommend a book such as Michael Freeman's, "On Composition" or alternatively, "The Photographer's Eye".

I would like a basic beginner book for 13-15 year old grandchildren so they can have some understanding of the fundamentals.

Recommendations??? Many thanks in advance.

In my opinion, the most important fundamental is to *see* the photo and to convey to the viewer what you *saw*.

"The Photographer's Eye" by Michael Freeman
and
"The Art of the Photograph" by Art Wolfe and Rob Sheppard
are amongst the best.

The mechanics and technical aspects can be learned as they get more experience.

You can't go wrong with the Peterson Book......
But you know your Grandchildren best.
I really like to start kids on the automatic modes, because developing their eye, is far more important than the technical stuff. Also because Auto modes will fail in some situations, and those are perfect jumping off points for.....
"OK lets figure out why the Auto mode had trouble.
Kids generally remember specific discussions better than General ones.
Another good one is Back light vs front light, --getting in the habit of looking for where the shadows fall is simple and very helpful.
Good luck

For an alternative learning method, they might want to consider YouTube videos. I found the Snap Chick's Basics of Photography series to be well-organized, informative, and fun to watch. 56 videos in all, mostly under 5 minutes each.
