Planning a self-drive tour around Iceland. 14 days. Should I take a laptop? Can use for external hard drive transfer of photos. Sure adds weight however. Alternatives? Thanks.

A laptop will allow you to check weather, features to see the next day, etc. Your US cell phone will not work there unless you and an international plan. And then I would check with your Carrier for details and prices.

I checked the weather on my phone there via WeatherBug and WIFI at the motel. As well as internet searching.
I had no need to get cell service there, but I had the option of connecting in an emergency (and getting billed for each 24 hour period or portion thereof) with my carrier. I forget the 24 hour period cost. I left the phone in "airplane mode" to inhibit cell service.

When I went to Iceland I brought my 13 inch computer for downloads. The 13 inch didn’t take much space and I was able to view my photos.

You can buy a Vodafone sim card very reasonably in Iceland. That will give local phone # & access as well as data. I used my vodafone every day in Iceland, mainly for maps. Lots easier than buying a GPS with Icelandic maps.

I've been to Iceland three times one time camping in the highlands and I"ve taken my laptop every time. It's nice to have a laptop to do some post processing when you have time. I normally download each days shoot onto the laptop and then back them up to a portable HDD. Never had an issue and the extra weight didn't bother me.

Wasnt available at the airport anymore, at least in October- so pretty much need to get it in Rejkjavik. Otherwise agree, its a good tip, my son does this every time he goes. My office phone has global roaming, my wife just used Whatsapp and wifi which is a good alternative if you have wifi
