Planning a self-drive tour around Iceland. 14 days. Should I take a laptop? Can use for external hard drive transfer of photos. Sure adds weight however. Alternatives? Thanks.

We went to Iceland for a week, didn't take one.
One less thing to worry about.
Granted, it would have been a "nice convenience".
Did we need it, nope.

But ultimately it IS up to YOU isn't it...

If you don't trust your memory cards, get an external "drive" that has a card reader in it.
(We didn't have one of those either.)

I’ll check that out. Might be ideal solution. Thanks.

I brought my MS Surface for two weeks in Iceland, though I didn't use it much. Just make sure you have enough SD, etc cards to cover your trip

I'd prefer to bring a portable hard drive or SSD that would accept SD cards. Save all your SD cards till you get home. You can save all your pictures onto the drive and still have them on the cards. I wish more cameras had two card slots. If the card is defective, baking it up doesn't do much good.

People have mentioned the TP-Link multi-purpose device, but I don't think that being made any longer.

EDIT: I did a search online and on Amazon for a hard drive with an SD card slot. I got lots of listings for external drives, but none with an SD card slot. Searching doesn't always work.

I brought mine- you’re driving, so why not. I like to review the day’s shots in the evening. Do get a 4wd or at least an SUV, it’s very easy to sink into that soft black sand in a regular car and there are not a lot of tow trucks. Cost me $700 and 3 hours, had to wait until the driver had finished his school bus route..

They warn people about not going "off-road", and in most cases there it is illegal to do so. They are very protective of the land environment there.

Sadly this was in a parking lot right off the highway. End spot, and a front wheel drive Renault Megane. The sand had drifted in. Car had very little ground clearance.

Good advice! I'm planning a trip this fall, to coincide with the end of the tourist season...had not thought about the car choice...or taking a computer, actually (I'm a LF film guy)....
