If you missed my second post it's above. Del.

I did read your 2nd post just above.

I bought the 24-70/4.0 for reasons as mentioned. Later I bought an Open Box Sony body which came with a free 28-70. "Free" in that the other Open Box version of that same body was the same price but minus the lens.

Bottom line is that the 24-70 is somewhat better than the 28-70 <<BUT>> if only I had already owned the lesser lens before buying the better lens I would not have bought the better one at all. Perhaps I might have bought a 24-105 for a real step up, but the 28-70 is a damnt fine lens and weighs next to nothing.

The 24-70 is better, but its not several hundred $$ better, especially given nearly the same FL range. Hogsters will always point out "24 vs 28mm". Hogsters are forever making mountains out of ant hills. Its a very important sacrament within the Sacred UHH Tradition.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"28 vs 24" ?!? Do you hear much about 45 vs 50 vs 55 vs 58 for normal lenses ? Thaz a wider gap than 24 vs 28 but theres no discussion at all. Somebody somewhere declared that 28 vs 24mm reeeeeally matters and all the lemmings fell into line with that. Its really just two approximately 26mm lenses, so wheres the big deal ?!?
Settling all that in one fell swoop, if you do get a Nikon, get the 24-120, worlds coolest kit lens. I use one, but I try to keep it between 28 to 105 cuz thaz real kit lens turf !
Another vote for a Fuji body with their excellent 18-55, although if your budget allows it, I’d consider the X-T4 specifically to get the IBIS. I believe the X-T4 is often sold with the very sharp and versatile 16-80, which would be my first choice. You’ll find that the Fuji is unite small and light, but the APS-C sensor delivers very useful low light/high ISO performance to at least ISO 6400.
Thanks TriX - I shall look - will bare the IBIS in mind. I see you consider the 18-55 to be excellent. The original 14-45 Panasonic lens was another "excellent" kit lens.
At least one reviewer is bullish on the new MFT products from Olympus and Panasonic.
That report gets a WOW from me - thanks for the link. The articulated monitor on my GX8 was the main reason I didn't upgrade to the GX9 which doesn't fully articulate, although the GX9 has an electro magnetic shutter - effectively eliminating shutter shock. I have been aware of occasional shutter shock which, if I do move to change brands, I will be looking for in reviews.
I never get any shock with my GX8. Acoarst I never use the mechanical shutter. Why would I ? or anyone ?
Very true if the weather cooperates. We once took a mini-bus tour of that area, and the weather was so dismal that it was hard to imagine anyone wanting to live there. On the way, I did manage to take a picture of the Loch Ness Monster outside of the bus. (Ha Ha.)
But seriously, expand your horizons if you can. I've been all over England and Scotland, and while some parts are stunningly beautiful, perhaps a change of scenery to the American west, the Rockies, Grand Canyon, Yosemite etc. might inspire you again.
A lot of people dis kit lenses and think they are poor quality lenses. Think of it this way; would a car manufacturer build a luxury model with space age suspension and then put crappy seats in it? Ask someone what they thought of it and they’d say to never buy one because it was uncomfortable.
Nikon’s 18-55 kit lens is inexpensively built with plastic barrels, but the image quality is quite good. I’ve acquired three over the years and all have great performance but lack the silky smooth zoom ring action of expensive models. But they perform well, which is the most important part.
Any manufacturer that builds a quality body and then includes a crappy lens would be cutting their own throat. A new buyer of that brand camera isn’t going to say, “yes a great camera but I need to buy an expensive lens because the kit lens takes bad photos.” Rather, they’d say, “don’t buy that brand because it takes bad photos.”
On long haul touring motorcycles, rider comfort makes or breaks it. It can have lots of power, plenty of luggage space and great wind protection but if the seat, bars and pegs have you aching after an hour in the seat, nobody will buy it. That’s because a touring bike without comfort isn’t a touring bike. Period. The same way a camera with a crappy lens is a crappy camera. Period.
Yes - I also - I have also noted that other manufacturers are now leaving out sensor filters to obtain more sharp.
Thanks Therwol - I guess I'm getting long-in-the-tooth for long trips.
I think you have something there, but there has to be the best kit lens of the bunch to find. One problem is that of good and bad copies - is it possible that one manufacturer might be more prone to this than another?
MFT has been my thing since the Panasonic G1 was launched. However, I feel my photography is in the doldrums, and thought I'd try a larger sensor, but in a small and light MILC. All suggestions gratefully received. Thanks, Del.
Which camera has the best kit lens?
That's an easy question to answer, the camera with the best kit lens is the camera with the best photographer handling it.
I bet there's no correct answer to this question. Kit lenses are great when you are buying a body for which you have no lenses. If I ever buy a Z9, I'll need Z lenses.
