I wouldn't wish a 12MP DSLRosaur relic onto anyone, at any price, not in a modern 2022 world with 24MP options. Fine camera if it's the only one you bought and kept back in 2008. Not worth spending money on today.

I find ANNOYING those who find Paul annoying!!! In addition to LOTS of excellent information and advice, he brings a welcome bit of lightheartedness at opportune moments!!!

If you don't want to use all the megapixels then cut down the file size. Having too many megapixels is never a problem, while not having enough can be a big problem. To fault a camera because it's file size is too big makes no sense at all.

You are correct. Except that if you find yourself doing that most of the time, there are better options. One of the important things that I have learned from my D850 is that there are a lot of situations where 46 MP are simply not needed or beneficial. That's why I always have my D500 with me also. 21 MP are a better choice a surprising majority of the time. And the D500 handles much quicker, easier, and just generally better. And it captures images that are equivalent in appearance and character in all but the most difficult situations.

This camera is not mentioned at all in some searches in the web. I know from some people here that it is a great camera for portraits. Is this the camera that had the recalled a while back?.

Do not buy the old D600. It was recalled for spattering lubricants and metal shavings onto the sensor. I know a guy who had two. Both were ultimately replaced with D610s at no cost to him.

I agree. While I shoot a d750 and d810, the d700 has some of the best SOOC colors of any Nikon. It is a true professional camera.

My wife was a Nikon fanatic (She passed in 2015). Me, less so, and I have taken the plunge to mirrorless (and not even Nikon--Oh the shame!)

Sorry to hear about you wife. She was obviously smarter than her husband. Do you have anything to add to this post?

Then why did you waste money on the D850?

Think the OP has left the discussion. From their posts, seems like they wanted a new Nikon DSLR for under a $1,000. Though could be wrong about this. This would severely limit the choices.

You don't have to resort to using another camera to shoot a D850 at fewer megapixels. In the FX mode, (no cropping), you can shoot at 45.4, 25.6 or 11.4 megapixels. This is an adjustment in the camera's menu or using the QUAL button on the camera (for JPEGS or TIFF files only. The size of NEF files has to be changed in the camera's menu.) It gives you some flexibility. Note that the image area that does involve cropping is not the same thing and that you have the same options of you do crop. The online manual has all of this information.

The D850 is not a waste of money. It is a very good camera that is ideal for some types of photography that I do. I'll be taking it as my primary camera on a railroad photography excursion next month. The images of the night sky that it produces are unmatchable. It will shoot everything else I do beautifully, if I choose to use it. But there are easier and more convenient ways to do some of those things. That's why I bought a D500 AFTER buying and using my D850 for several months.

And I know all about using the camera with other shooting formats. The D850 offers four or five choices. I do that all the time. I even shoot it in DX or square format with DX lenses. Sometimes it's nicer to just use a slightly smaller, slimmer, more comfortable camera.

My personal opinion is that the best Nikon DSLR in the $1000 range would be a used D810 with a low shutter count. But that doesn't include any lenses. We have no information on what the OP is using and what lenses they possess. A good set of FX lenses alone will cost more than $1000, even used. You can go back 20 years and buy some screw drive AF lenses, but that's a crapshoot. Some are excellent. Some are mediocre by today's standards, and it will show on a high megapixel camera.

All good questions. Actually a bit of "sleuthing" shows that the OP is a Canon shooter who has previously used Sony and asked about Olympus gear. So maybe just looking to try a Nikon to see if the grass is greener with a Nikon camera? And wants a "great deal".

Nikon D750. I have two D750's (one for a back up) and I love them. I also bought a D780. I love it too, but I use it more for inside using the Live View that's is much better than the 750. A Nikon 35mm 1.4G lives on my D780 most of the time and a 24-70 or 80-200 lives on my D750. I also have a D500 and my Nikon 200-500mm lives on it most of the time. I did use my Nikon18-35 1.4G on the inside of a old house on my D780 this week, and it turned out awesome. I don't think I will ever buy a mirrorless, very happy with what I have.
