Where are all these images now? Assumiing they are in a folder on your computer, right click the folder and 'get info' on the folder will tell you the folder size.

Whichever size hard drive you decide, don't cheap out on quality. As they say, it's not IF your drive will fail, it's when. Have at least one backup, either online or physical. Three copies is best, but two is minimum.

Do you only save the raw images? If you convert some or all of them to JPEG or other format, you'll need space for that, too.

Have to be honest here, while words such as, acoarst, thaz Howard, verrrrrry, and the suchlike look "cute" written down, and may make the author feel special /smart/unique, they oftentimes make what is a helpful and knowledgeable reply to a question, difficult to understand. It's a shame because the good and useful advice gets lost or forgotten while looking up "acoarst" for example, (for which of course, no definition exists)! I don't mean to be rude or disrespectful of the author, but sometimes just a straightforward answer would be better.

Sure. I’m using the Nikon D610. My goal is to corral all the photos (desktop, etc.) into one place.

Thank you! The D610 largest raw file is the lossless compressed 14 bit file (it doesn't have the uncompressed file) is 25.4MB and thus the 2TB drive would hold about 78000 of these files.

This goes beyond the question asked. I store raw files on my external hard drive but I also store post processed files. A single raw file from my Nikon D850 fully processed on Photoshop is often 500-600MB. Those files fill up a 2 TB external hard drive pretty quickly.

You don't need an estimate, you know the exact amount of space needed. If you already have 12,000 RAW files, just look at the directories wherever you have stored them and you will see the space taken. Unless you purposely have directed them somewhere else, your system automatically puts them in "Pictures" on Drive C:. In any event, you can add up the sizes of the file groupings, and unless your Drive C: is larger than is customary for a normal home computer, they easily will fit on your 2TB drive - with a LOT of space left over.

Check your camera manual. Nearly all will give you the file sizes by format. You can determine from there. My 24MP Sony is giving 25MB files. Pixels to bytes are not 1:1, this just happened to be for this camera and RAW. This file size would by 80,000 files into 2TB. A gig is 1,000 MB, so 2,000,000 is your 2TB drive. Divided by 25MB gets to 80,000 files.

Isn't math a wonderful thing.

Eileen, it looks like you'd be using less than 1/2 the storage space of that drive.

I don't think it's any issue here, as the raws are large, but drives do have a minium file size used also. So a thousand small files, say 1k can take as much space as a thousand 10 k files. Also drive space is used for overhead so drives don't hold labelled size as data.

This sounds like a math problem from when I was a kid.

Question 1. If Photographer Joe has a 2TB hard drive, and his camera takes pictures measuring 12K, how many pictures can Photographer Joe fit onto the drive?
Answer: 2 TB = 2,000,000,000 KB / 12 = 166,666,666.6666667

Question 2. How many Nikon D850 cameras would Photographer Joe have to buy in order to take 166,666,666.6666667 pictures?"
Answer: 166,666,666.6666667 / 200,000 = 834

Question 3. At about $3,000 each, how much will Photographer Joe have to spend on cameras?
Answer: 3,000 X 834 = $2,502,000

Question 4. How likely is it that a photographer would have $2,502,000 to spend on cameras?
Answer:

My math might be off a bit here, but it was a fun exercise.

It depends on the individual picture that you take and whether you use 12 bit or 14 bit lossless compression, but you asked for an estimate.

At 14 bit your photo size is approximately 29.2 so rounded 30 MB. multiply 30 x 12,000 and you get 360 GB. Or to put it another way, 2 TB / 30MB will let you store 66,000 pictures. Good enough for 2 more years?

Depending on the average size of you photos, it cold many more than you think. I have around 90K images of varying sizes (RAW and jpg from cameras with 6, 12 and 24 MP sensors) on a 1TB drive plus several other miscellaneous files and I am using bout 90% of its capacity.
