Like I said in my post, one of problems I have with Lightroom is it's cataloging feature since I have photos on multiple drives, dvds, cds, etc. My understanding is that I need to make different catalogs for each separate device (i.e. one catalog for each drive, each dvd, each cd, etc.). Is there anyway to make a master catalog for all my devices so I know where a certain photo is? If I have to make different catalogues then I'll have to make over 50 different catalogues. Is there another way of doing this so I can have one catalogue with a listing of all my photos either with lightroom or another program.

kelby even suggests using only one catalog for multiple HD's

On of the advantages to Lightroom is that you Can have as may different devices in the same catalog as you want.
thank you all for your advice, it was wonderful getting so much feed back.....it all seems very positive. Will do as suggested and have a go at a free trial.

thank you travelman, seems a little advance for my beginners status. I had seen an advert on someone that had done videos on how to use it...
Might leave that until I know what I'm doing with the camera first...
Hi newey: You are more than welcome. Keep in mind there are some great tutorials out there on the net for Lightroom as well as newer versions than the one I own. I bought mine through Craigs List from a teacher that has unused copies left over from his class on it, and then sells them for $40 each copy. There are any number of UHH members that love the program and there is much that you can do with it, so don't, not consider it as a valuable program to add to your photo editing software.
I see presets that you can buy for lightroom that changes your photos.
If you have already purchased Lightroom, then this is a moot point, but if you are looking for PP software, I have been a big fan of ACDSee Pro for a number of years. ACDSee first came out as a file viewing program. In almost all other software at the time, you had to individually open and then close each photo. ACDSee was designed for law enforcement, and all you had to do was click NEXT and it would automatically close the photo and open the next. It evolved into a fairly sophisticated photo processing program, and I love it. I have friends who purchased Lightroom, but after seeing ACDSee Pro, they went that route instead.

Hi does anyone use the program Adobe Lightroom? Can you tell me what you think of it?
thank you
I've been using LR for about 18 months-started with LR3 now and love it. It was a tough transition from doing everything in PS but now I do 90% of my work in LR. I use PS for extra creative stuff that can't be done in LR. Just make sure you keep everything correctly labeled, key worded, etc. Scott Kelbys book was a great help getting started.

A 30-day trial is a good way to test out most software, but not much use for Lightroom. It will take you that long to work out how to open it and import a picture.
Elements 10 was way over my head. Lightroom is great. Google Julieanne Kost and you will find great tutorials that walk you through everything in Lightroom.
