Hi newey: I have Lightroom 3.6 The program is designed more for processing large quanity photo batches, or for some one who has to process photos in a very large volume. Lightroom three also has a good catalogueing system to help keep track of your work. The program it's self is typically Adobe, meaning there is a wide variety of out comes you can get by the way you use the program. There is a higher learning curve for lightroom over say Adobe Photoshop Elements 10, I have both and tend to use Elements 10 more than lightroom. Either one will work along with some very good free ware, like GIMP and Picasso. Hope this helps.
thank you travelman, seems a little advance for my beginners status. I had seen an advert on someone that had done videos on how to use it...
Might leave that until I know what I'm doing with the camera first...
I have lightroom 4 and love it.

If you know what you want to change to enhance your photo and your willing to spend the time and money to PP get a software that can. You want to hit a couple buttons and call yourself a PP editor or you edited a photo.........reality is in the eye of the beholder.

Yes Lightroom 4.2 is the current state of the art
If you are just starting your photography journey and think it will be a long term passion, start using Lightroom and just start learning it. there are plenty of training books and videos out there.
thank you GD Roth, now I'm wavering..
thanks lighthouse, didn't realise there has been so much on it.
thank you all for replying. Now I'll have to look into it some more..
LightRoom is great.
tremendous cataloging capabilities
there is a learning curve, but there is one with other programs also - it just is not that hard to learn
it has great batch capabilities, but it is excellent for single images also
it has soft proofing and can be good to print from
although it was designed as a RAW converter, you can process JPEGs and TIFFs without destroying digital information
it doesn't do everything - for that Adobe has Photoshop
I started with 3.x and now use 4.x - I would say much depends on you. If you're willing to pay for software and are willing to live within the confines of the LightRoom database then you will thrive with LR. If you like to move folders around within Windows Explorer or Mac Finder then you will find much grief and heartache in LR or any other database driven photo management tool.
Given it's aggressive pricing I would point anyone who isn't going to extensively manipulate their photos but wants more professional results than Picassa can yield towards LR.
I have Lightroom 4 and love it. It was a struggle at first and I knew verylittle about pp at first. Get a book and take it one step at a time and it will become second nature. but not overnight. There are plenty of tutorials and also a special lightroom blog or site where you can quick answers to "stupid" (I have asked many) questions from pros. I use Elements too for special effects but rely on Lightroom for 90% of what I do
A must for serious photographers!!
