I was thinking tablet. Download to a tablet and you can look at you images ASAP. You don't even need a tablet with huge storage if you download to a cloud storage by way of an iPad.

Look at the RAV Power website for a device called a file hub. Allows transfer from a memory card to a hard drive without the need for a computer. I have one and it works. Don’t know if this is exactly what you are looking for but worth checking out.

Several companies used to make portable hard drives with LED screens for the purpose you describe, but apparently they are no longer made.

B&H has a product with SD slot and USB ports that will load photos without a computer, and includes an app to wirelessly connect to your smartphone for viewing and editing:

A friend of mine has one of these but the company is having problems.

Have you tried talking to the people running the photo trip for clarification? Seems the most direct route to me with the best information about what they are suggesting.

Mac had something like this in 2010...might still be around.

It is what you are looking for...I think.

I download to my phone when I want to travel light. I gives me a daily backup and capability to view. I use 1 mem card per day and keep the mem card from previous days in the hotel. My phone has a large amount of internal storage and a micro sd slot I can utilize if needed. My main thought is to have a backup and keep them as far apart as physically possible.

How much storage do you need? The IPod touch can have up to 256gb. That would be the smallest portable hard drive with a screen that I can think of. If you need more storage then you can get an IPad Pro with up to 1TB but that’s a big jump in price over an iPod touch. But much bigger screen.

The impression I got from your question was about using an LED's instead of cables. Before Wi-Fi was big, some devices used LED's and light sensors for serial communication. I worked with portable barcode scanners with SSD storage using this method to load and dump data, but it was slow compared with Wi-Fi. Given the size of photo files, I can't imagine this still being practical today. Also, this involves a light transceiver at both the computer terminal and the storage device itself, not nearly as convenient as USB connections which as universally present on personal computers.

That would be my take on it. Your photos. Your back-up, if any. Do what works for you. What are they going to do? Search you to make sure you brought a satisfactory back-up with you?

I believe thaz called a tablet. Some are not much bigger than a phone. Usually have a single port so youd need a card reader and possibly an adapter.

You can get an ipad with 256 GB storage - and a simple memory card reader. You edit on that as well. That is probably the best option at this time if cost is not prohibitive. Of course, for travel this means one more device, one more charger, etc....

Epson used to make them - I think the 80 gb was over $700. They were never popular.

I have one of those Epson devices that hasn't been used in a very long time. I think it read SD and CF cards, but it didn't have a large enough HD by today's file standards nor does it have any modern card slots. It wasn't cheap either. Haven't seen much that is newer. Best of luck.
