if your images go from 1024 wide to 2048 wide, that's 4 times the area so a factor of 4 in byte size.

It takes an hour to export them all, so I didn't want to confirm the actual results. I'm not sure the JPEG files are linear in there diskspace needs. Flickr is telling me that 13,382 images on their site, all at 2048px wide, are using 25.9GB this morning. So, maybe it is a factor of 4x?

I need to look at it better but wondered if storage space would be an issue

If you double the width the photo will look strange unless you double the height at the same time.

And you’re right that the jpg compression will not respond linearly but I don’t think it will make a large difference.

My only issue with LR is storage, right now I have a 20GB plan and 500 pics takes up 65% of my storage. I will have to delete these to work on my next event. Even going up to the 1TB plan I’d still run out if I tried to leave 6-8 events in LR. I wish they had an unlimited plan but it would probably be very expensive.

If you post through Lightroom Classic and store the files on your computer or your own hard drive they do not count towards your 20gb limit. Only full files that you upload to Adobe count against your storage space. There are two Lightrooms in your subscription, LRC and LR. LR is the online component of the LR ecosystem. Set up one master catalog in LRC. Then create collections with the pictures you want to share or just post to LR online for viewing. In LR, collections are called albums. Once on line you can view or share your pictures from any device connected to your account. Only one catalog at a time can be linked to the web, hence using a master catalog. You can also create up to five websites through LR and share that way as well, all through LRC or LR. All for your 9.99 a month. There are plenty tutorials online. There is a learning curve, but it is not to steep. There is a lot more than I mentioned here.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I see that’s where I’m messing up to begin with. I’m only using my IPad Pro and rarely turn my PC on. I need to look at LR Classic more.

If you are saving everything directly into Lightroom on your ipad, then everything you save is imported into the cloud and counts towards your 20 or 100gbs. You can download LRC and LR to your PC. Then you can manage both in one place. If you use Lightroom Camera on your phone, (its part of the phone app for LR), you can set it to download directly to your PC. I do not use LR cloud to store my pictures. Once I have them backed up on my PC and a back up copy and a clould back up to Amazon (if you have Amazon Prime, unlimited cloud storage is included.) then I delete what is stored in the Adobe LR cloud.

400-1000 photos is way too many. I usually have up to 100 photos on a website. Any more gets to be so large that people can't get through the whole thing easily.

If you are going to cover a few events a year and assuming you continue for a few years you are going to need space for a considerable number of photos.

As an example, I may produce just 100/300 for a 5k/10k or up to 600 for a full marathon. These will all be placed in their own easily located galleries on the website. Determining size and quality then becomes a balance to best suit easy fast browsing.

The other consideration will be the audience that will primarily be the competitors, they want to see pics of themselves, not just what you consider are the selected best of your shots.

On another topic, how do you handle a very large event with what I’m guessing will be well over a thousand runners and maybe a lot more? I just found out yesterday that I was selected to help cover the USA Track & Field 8k Mens National Championship race. The race is during a week long festival that already attracted a very large running field. I always try to get each runner a good finish line photo but can’t see that happening with that amount of people lol.
