Al,

I would recommend "Photoshop CC and Lightroom, A photographer's Handbook" by Stephen Laskevitch. I bought my copy at Barnes and Nobel about three years ago after comparing it to several competitors I saw on the shelf. I found it to be very complete and with clear color screenshots accompanying explanations of the various subjects presented. It followed a very logical order and covered important subjects like using each of the tools, layers, work flow, moving photos between the two programs to take advantage of each program's unique capabilities, etc.

The link below takes you to Amazon's page for this book:

Forget the books get Mike Kloskowski's training video The Photoshop System or see his videos, or blog or just google the function you can't remember.... usually on youtube or described as text.

https://mattk.com/product/the-photoshop-system/ I'm not Mike... but have met him at CANAM Expo twice. And this is not a sales pitch.... I use his course to learn and to refresh and "develop" my shots

Anything from Tony Northrup even free is overpriced.

You'll do quite well by searching through youtube for videos that are quite good and instructional.

Check out Scott Kelby's many books - some are written specifically for photographers and nearly every PS version has a book. There is also a 'power of hidden features' book on PS Elements, if you go that route - but it is old, old.

I have found "Adobe Photoshop CC for Photographers" 2018 edition by Martin Evening useful. Fairly dense but very comprehensive and there is an on line supplement.

Rather than investing in a book, I suggest you spend a little time on YouTube - EVERYTHING you need will be there. And free.

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/how-to/replace-image-background.html

and so on.

Newer versions of PS support slightly different technique, such as select and mask - to help swapping backgrounds easier.
