I have the very bad habit of sometimes moving files from the desktop to some new location - which I promptly forget...

There are lots of apps that search for files -- as long as you remember the file name.

The problem is not remembering where you put it, the problem is what you named it. (At least that's MY problem).

How fast Windows is depends on how many drives, what type and how many folders/files you have. Personally,I have found the current Windows search function very limited in what it finds, whereas Everything literally finds everything associated with what you search for. But if you’re satisfied with Windows search, God bless and carry on.

Windows search is nowhere as good as MasterSeeker and Everything, which are exactly the same in both speed and number of results. My search currently looks at 455,000 plus items - and is instantaneous for both! By the time I have finished typing in the item to be searched for, all the results are there! The only obvious problem is that there frequently are too many results; I tried putting the search term in parens, hoping that would limit the number of results to the exact item, but that didn't work - I'd be happy to learn some way which would.

I find it hard to believe there's anything faster than instantaneous!

That happens when you find a file before you start looking for it.

As stated below windows file manager will do the same thing. You can search by date a range of dates file name with wildcards in case you can't remember the complete name file size and last time file was viewed. You might Google a tutorial for using it to the best advantage

The problem with the search in Windows Explorer is that it is freakishly slow. I have on occasion wanted to find some file on my disk. Started a search using File Explorer, then while it ws running, switch over to a browser, opened Bing, searched for it there, found a web page with the same file, and downloaded it, before the first search finished. --- one search technology from Microsoft was able to find the file on the entire internet before a different search technology from Microsoft was able to find it on my PC.
