Bad Habit!

I have the very bad habit of sometimes moving files from the desktop to some new location - which I promptly forget. A while back, I ran across a program which is a great time saver (though I don't remember where I saw it). It will find - almost instantaneously! - any file or folder for which you are looking. It's free -- www.master-seeker (dot) com/. I HIGHLY recommend it!

You can do the same (in Windows) by going to File Manager and using the Search function.

As stated below windows file manager will do the same thing. You can search by date a range of dates file name with wildcards in case you can't remember the complete name file size and last time file was viewed. You might Google a tutorial for using it to the best advantage

I installed "Everything" based on a recommendation in one of these threads. I agree that it's great. I had trouble, though, looking for files on an external drive. Maybe I did something wrong!?

The files I create - and sometimes, others - go first on the Desktop, then are moved to wherever I think reasonable at the time. Sometimes, when I aggregate into what I then have considered better positioning, I lose track (forget) of the new location. Really, this happens only occasionally, and considerable time after the move.

I haven't done that in a long time, because it was so very slow - and you can't get faster than instantaneous!

Use what Windows gives you. Open a cmd prompt ( Start | type cmd | Enter), cd to the root of the drive ( cd .. or cd ..\..\etc), then use dir.
dir /s filename.extension If you are not sure of the filename, but know some of it, use *
dir /s file*.extnsion

Why make it so complicated?
'Everything'is just SO much faster, always available and free.
No matter which way you go, you still have to enter the same search parameters. Using a command prompt is, well, so 1980s. We've moved on a bit since then;)

I have found, for me, the first thing that 'pop in my head', is usually the best way to name a file, then find it later...

How fast Windows is depends on how many drives, what type and how many folders/files you have. Personally,I have found the current Windows search function very limited in what it finds, whereas Everything literally finds everything associated with what you search for. But if you’re satisfied with Windows search, God bless and carry on.
