I've been part of some good clubs and some really awful ones. In my experience, the better clubs are those that put the emphasis on field trips, taking pictures, etc, rather than club competitions. One the best clubs I've participated in is the Sierra Club Photo Club, NY Chapter. Being primarily a nature photographer, the club has a lot to offer - not only from the field trip side, but also the choices of guest presenters. An excellent experience overall.

I second that. A great opportunity to expand your horizons. But remember, if you are in a club long enough you are expected to contribute your time and efforts besides just drawing them out.

Hey my fellow HH family,

I live in Houston TX. and I'm looking for a camera club. I'm an experienced photographer looking for a fun group of like minded people who love taking photos, hanging out and having a great time. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I live in Houston and am a member of the Houston Photochrome Club. Aldo check out the Houston Camera Club and Bay Area Photo Club. And the Houston Photographic Society and the Houston Inner Loop club. In addition to clubs there are a lot of photo meet up groups in Houston.

What part of Houston do you live in?

If you live in Southern CA, you may want to check out the South Bay Camera Club in Torrance, CA. https://sbccphoto.org/

Actually, you don't really have to live that close. We have been meeting via Zoom since the pandemic started and will incorporate a hybrid Zoom model when we begin to meet live again. Our presenter this month lives in France.

I think you just stated the man problem with your search. From what I've heard here, camera clubs are not as good as people expect.

That is a pretty broad brush. My camera club in Thousand Oaks, Ca is excellent. Excellent photographers, guest speakers, outings, on line instruction that is excellent. If a club is not what you expect then I am sure there is always an opportunity to improve it.

As a part time resid of Houston I’ll be watching this to find a club there. I also recall there being a photo museum there as well.

I'm in RI and looking for a photo group. The term "club" has a mediocre connotation for me. My photographic work tends toward the "Art", surreal and abstract, as well as landscape and portraiture. Anyone have any suggestions?

Northwest Houston Photo Club, meets 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month at St. John Lutheran Church, 15235 Spring Cypress Rd, Cypress, TX 77429. 1st Tuesday is a program night featuring guest speakers and other programs of interest. 3rd Thursday is competition night, an informal, friendly, educational and sometimes hilarious photography competition for members only. We also do outings to various places and events during the year; some of them are better-attended than others but all are great photographic opportunities.

Friendly, outgoing membership that ranges from very talented professionals to rank amateurs, all skill levels are welcome. Meetings always start at 7:00, next program meeting is April 5, next competition meeting is April 19. Membership is $25/year individual or $40/year family but would be prorated for the rest of this year.

If you want to join us for a couple of meetings to see what it's all about and to see if you're a good fit, that is fine and you will be most welcome. If you enjoy photography, I guarantee you'll be a good fit as that is really the only requirement. No politics, no soapboxes, etc. Just good fun and photography. If you join us on Aprll 5, get there a little early and ask for Stan. I'll be glad to introduce you around and get you started. You won't have any problem getting acquainted and any photography topic will generate interest.

PM if any questions or concerns. Also if you wish, you can PM your email address and I will be glad to forward a newsletter and a little more information regarding the specific place for our meetings (it's a big church with several buildings).

I am a member of Houston Photowalks. We don't have monthly "meetings", but have scheduled photowalks around town and out of town. The people are friendly, fun and always willing to help others or answer questions. I have grown a lot through this club. Check it out here. https://www.meetup.com/HoustonPhotowalks/events/

Thanks for the response and I will definitely check it out.

I'm a long time club member but in another part of the country.

My advice echoes others. Try to find one that is a good match. The best way is to simply attend a couple of meetings and see what you think. You can figure out their level of collective expertise, friendliness and inspiration quite rapidly. Virtually all of them encourage visitors before they start hitting you up for joining and paying dues.

I live in Los Angeles, and while I haven't found a good club near me in the San Fernando Valley, during covid a friend suggested that I join the Northern Virginia Photographic Society, which has been on zoom. Located in the DC area, they have weekly meetings. I have learned a lot from their presentations and critiques. I do miss out on the field trips, but I have been able to make some friends from afar. The membership fee is not high. If I could find something like this close by I would love it.
