Hey my fellow HH family,

I live in Houston TX. and I'm looking for a camera club. I'm an experienced photographer looking for a fun group of like minded people who love taking photos, hanging out and having a great time. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Northwest Houston Photo Club, meets 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month at St. John Lutheran Church, 15235 Spring Cypress Rd, Cypress, TX 77429. 1st Tuesday is a program night featuring guest speakers and other programs of interest. 3rd Thursday is competition night, an informal, friendly, educational and sometimes hilarious photography competition for members only. We also do outings to various places and events during the year; some of them are better-attended than others but all are great photographic opportunities.

Friendly, outgoing membership that ranges from very talented professionals to rank amateurs, all skill levels are welcome. Meetings always start at 7:00, next program meeting is April 5, next competition meeting is April 19. Membership is $25/year individual or $40/year family but would be prorated for the rest of this year.

If you want to join us for a couple of meetings to see what it's all about and to see if you're a good fit, that is fine and you will be most welcome. If you enjoy photography, I guarantee you'll be a good fit as that is really the only requirement. No politics, no soapboxes, etc. Just good fun and photography. If you join us on Aprll 5, get there a little early and ask for Stan. I'll be glad to introduce you around and get you started. You won't have any problem getting acquainted and any photography topic will generate interest.

PM if any questions or concerns. Also if you wish, you can PM your email address and I will be glad to forward a newsletter and a little more information regarding the specific place for our meetings (it's a big church with several buildings).

Hi,

There are two clubs in your area. The Kings Park Camera Club, approximately 30 members, and the Huntington Camera Club, approximately 100 members.
Please message me if you want more specific information. Enjoy.

I think you just stated the man problem with your search. From what I've heard here, camera clubs are not as good as people expect.

Well, I don't want to make a blanket statement but the one that joined wasn't a good fit for me, so I tend to agree with some reservations only based on my limited experiences.

I am a member of Houston Photowalks. We don't have monthly "meetings", but have scheduled photowalks around town and out of town. The people are friendly, fun and always willing to help others or answer questions. I have grown a lot through this club. Check it out here. https://www.meetup.com/HoustonPhotowalks/events/

You may think this is totally crazy but the Park West Camera Club in NYC now has its meetings, monthly competitions, image critique workshops, and once a month guest speakers all on Zoom. Before Covid we met weekly (except in July/August) in person. People miss the in-person contact and frequent photo walks but also enjoy the regular contact with other photographers and now we have members with homes in other states who can participate. Modest dues are required to pay for guest speakers and judges. Check out @parkwestcsmeraclub on Instagram and www.parkwestcameraclub.org

I've gone on a few photowalks. They involved people lining up to take that "good shot," with some people taking way too long to push the shutter button.

I just replied and suggested folks check out Park West Camera Club in NYC. Currently, nearly all our activities are on Zoom and we have members who live in Connecticut, New Jersey and Long Island. Since Covid, many members who live farther outside of the city at least part time (upstate NY, Florida, California) are active members. We aren't doing as many field trips as we used to but hope that will come back eventually.

I've been part of some good clubs and some really awful ones. In my experience, the better clubs are those that put the emphasis on field trips, taking pictures, etc, rather than club competitions. One the best clubs I've participated in is the Sierra Club Photo Club, NY Chapter. Being primarily a nature photographer, the club has a lot to offer - not only from the field trip side, but also the choices of guest presenters. An excellent experience overall.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience. Are you implying you went with Houston Photowalks? I don't have that experience at all. Maybe your expectations are different.
