Unless you like spending money, get a name brand phone from TracFone and join their plan. We've gotten phones for under $50 - Samsung and Motorola. The cost of using them is ridiculously low. We were paying Verizon $165 a month several years ago. Now I pay about that much for a year's use with TracFone.
Did you know that Verizon bought TracFone?
NEW YORK – Verizon (NYSE: VZ) – Today Verizon Communications (NYSE, Nasdaq: VZ) announced that it has completed its previously announced acquisition of TracFone Wireless, Inc. and TracFone's family of brands, bringing the leading premium and value wireless brands together on the leading wireless network.Nov 23, 2021
Not sure what is going to happen in the future with pricing - it would be nice if V dropped their pricing to match TRacFone...

This isn’t usually a good sign. Often the bigger company doesn’t like the lower priced competition and the smaller company disappears.
Just my 2 cents.

I actually have a TracFone plan. So far it has served me well.

I had a Motorola Razr. It worked OK for a couple years and did what I wanted it to do. I used an Apple ][ in the late '70s. We used it in the lab. When the Mac came out it was typical Apple. No third party hardware available. I needed things that Apple didn't have, so I moved to PC. Stayed there for 40 years.
I got a new wife. She was into Apple. iPhone, Mac Air. I had to learn a few things about Macs to help connect her stuff to my printer and act as IT when she had problems. We would send texts back and forth, but between Apple and non-Apple, texts sometimes took 24 hours to cross the divide.
I had to go out of town for a couple days. Forgot my phone. So since it was up for renewal anyway I got an iPhone 8+. That gave me a phone to use and the texts went through right away. So I stuck with the iPhone.
The iPhone is different, but it works. I would say that since your family is on iPhone, you should be too. It worked for me.

• Price (I don't need to pay for the name.)
• I don't need whatever they have that may be super special. (I just need a
phone, and yes, with a couple of apps. Camera is an extra benefit. The S-III has a nice camera and pano function.)
The only reason I'll be replacing my S-III is that it will no longer be supported (work) after 12/31/2022.
But that's just me.
Running a business, I needed a phone. Got a flip phone. It worked well. Eventually I upgraded to a modern phone that had internet. Internet connectivity became essential to the job. I could order stuff online. I could see the weather radar. I built a program that kept track of my 20-40 zones of irrigation. Communicate with employees and other farmers from the field. As more things became available they became essential.
My Android phone did the job until I got a new wife. Then texts between Android and iPhone sometimes took 24 hours to get across. Got an iPhone (the wife is always right) and stuck with it. Still using an iPhone 8+ from 2018. It's still working. Not planning to get a new one until this one quits or until Apple comes up with features that I consider essential. Current estimates are iPhone 15 or 16 et. seq.
I was happy using a PC for 40 years and considered the Mac et al. to be too pricey, but since my wife invests in APPL (she has an MBA and I was hopeless at economics), I have nothing against getting Apple hardware. APPL is paying for it.

My Samsung Note8 is finally giving up the ghost. The charging connector doesn't work (yes, I've cleaned it) and the battery life is getting intolerable.
I quit Apple when they refused to repair my iPhone6 Plus that developed iPhone touch disease (a bad batch of system boards) because I had the battery replaced at uBreakIFix. I swore I'd never go back, but because my whole family carries iPhones I'm left out of sharing family stuff easily.
I want the best camera possible for photos and video and I'm trying to decide between the iPhone 13 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.
Any opinions?

My fully biased suggestion is to stay with Samsung.
At the moment I like Apple IO what wasn’t always the case. Apple was restricted a lot especially with iPhone 6. Today I find android is the one who has a lot of restrictions.
Some one ask me to help to set up android phone brand new out of box and when we started it there is so many questions where I had to google it and I’m still not sure if everything is answered right. Yes you can change it later- would I remember what changes I would made......

If you only need it for phone, take it to a local strip mall computer/phone repair shop, if you live near one. At least with Apple iPhones, replacing batteries and charging connectors were the most common repairs that they did. If you get a new phone, get one with induction charging, since wear in the connectors seems to be the most common "wear-and-tear" problem.
My wife and I both use IPhone 13 Pro Max’s. My sister uses the latest Samsung. Both are good. I could be wrong but I believe that there are more available apps for the IPhone.

An Apple a day keeps the photographers at bay.

Samsung S22, S22+, or S22 Ultra are fantastic
Get yourself a flip phone!
Flip phone, small calculator, pocket camera, small notebook, and stubby pen.
I have an iPhone 8+, consumer cellular $20 a month, the phone was paid off at $20 a month, phone price reasonable.
