I bought a cheap plastic dustpan with a little hand broom the other day at Home Depot. The next day I was asked to write my thoughts about it. I started to tell them that I was very disappointed that it did not come with batteries or even a way to plug it in. But I never hit send.

I will start responding to surveys when they pay me for my time! Otherwise I just give a very negative response.

About once a year, I actually walk into my bank to deposit a check (about a 3-minute procedure) and within minutes, I receive an emailed customer satisfaction survey asking me to describe "my banking experience." I guess they're hoping I'll say it saved my marriage, gave me a positive outlook on life, cured my heart disease and left me emotionally fulfilled.

One hopes it’s just a phase. A rather stupid phase.

Nah, more companies are getting on the survey bandwagon.

One potential reason is if the company is ISO certified (which many companies are). A metric of customer satisfaction is required as part of the regular evaluation/improvement process.

I did not know that. Been YEARS since I worked with ISO.

While in the course of a search for a hand broom ~ dustpan combo on Amazon a few years ago, I came across many that looked as though they'd fit the bill. One of those, however, stood out from among the others, not simply on the basis of price (which was, of course, cheap), but mainly on the fact that the sweeper nestled deftly in a slot in the handle of the pan, and so the two, when not in actual use, would become one and thus inseparable.

Digging deeper as any conscious consumer would, I read (and I paraphrase) the following user review, and it changed my life:

"I like that the broom and the pan fit together, but alas, I can only award a single star. No instructions accompanied this broom/pan combo, so I find this purchase impossible to use."

When I get a call for a survey, I respond, "I'm a professional, and I charge for my time. Give me a P.O. number and address and I'll give you a survey when I get paid. Thanks for calling."

I simply respond with "I don't do surveys." and hang up.

That's funny. I would have hit send though.

Yes, those surveys can be annoying, and that request gives you an idea why there are so many undeserved negative reviews. "Okay. You want a review? You want to waste my time? I'll give you a review."
