I didn't begin drinking coffee till I was in my fifties, and it took me a while to figure out that I liked it black. I could never get the milk and sugar proportions right. I tried all different kinds of "good" coffee, and I finally settled on old fashioned Maxwell House. I tried "top rated" coffees, but I couldn't see the appeal, especially considering the premium price. I was disappointed that I didn't like the Kona coffee samples they gave us when we went to Hawaii. Just as well, I guess. I've gotten variety packs of K-cups, but none of the flavors appealed to me.

In a documentary about coffee a few years ago, it said that America was given was what was basically the dregs in terms of coffee quality. When I see small bags of coffee selling for $10, I'm glad I like my Maxwell House.

How about instant? That was all my parents drank, but I've never tried it. As for Starbucks, I'd have to take their language course before I ordered there. Asking for a small cup of coffee would probably get me a wide-eyed stare from the clerk.

Comments are welcome.

When I used to travel a lot for work, Starbucks was one of those predictable commodities for a quick breakfast on the run that’s the same wherever you are and can be a Godsend at 6AM in an airline terminal before an early flight ( and $4 coffee doesn’t matter when you’re on an expense account). Mine was a Grande decaf, no fat Latte with 6 sugars ( go ahead and laugh ).

Next time, have a little coffee 🤦🏻‍♂️

I guess I should stand up for coffee lovers everywhere. I've always been unconventional, so here goes: In my family my siblings and I drank coffee with milk and sugar starting around age 8 or 9. Throughout my growing years I drank four or five cups a day. Today at 79 I still drink five or six cups a day, half and half, no sugar. I will sometimes have it black. After dinner, I will often have a cup or two of tea, no sugar. Surprisingly, coffee has never affected my nighttime sleeping, nor do I get jitters from its consumption.

Actually, just writing about it makes me want to get a cup!

I drank Peet's coffee when it first hit the market...roasted within 5 days of purchase...the oil dripped from the beans...fantastic.

But eventually tired of coffee, and entered the far more vast and satisfying world of tea...and never looked back.

McDonalds and White Castle make good coffee- not Starbucks so much, that's yuppie coffee where they order weird coffee concoctions so the person behind them in line will be impressed.
I think the Fench Press is the best homemade coffee process and Keurig is the most convenient.

I prefer CHEMEX pourover for flavor or an ADC for convenience

I don’t drink the stuff, never have. I don’t like the taste, but I do think it smells good. The rest of my family make up for my non-drinking.

My, Oh my, do I love my coffee. I use a "reusable" Keurig K-cup and I drink McCoffee which is about $8.00 for a large container at Walmart. It provides me with the convenience of a single cup of coffee without the high cost of K-cups and the impact on global pollution.

"Keurig produced 9.8 billion non-biodegradable K-Cups in 2015, each taking up to 500 years to break down. Put end-to-end, they’d circle the globe around 10.5 times! That’s a lot of waste. Some cities around the world, like Hamburg, Germany, have even banned the use of these machines in state buildings due to their negative environmental impact.

Each K-Cup is also considerably more expensive than simply using traditional coffee grounds. Your basic Folger’s brand K-Cup will cost around $50 a pound. Even high-end traditionally packaged beans averages at around $15-20 a pound, and Dunkin Donuts Original Blend will set you back $8.99 a pound."

I started drinking coffee at five years old when my grandmom had friends over for coffee. She would fill a cup with rice crispies and cover it with a milky coffee for me. I loved it.

I have brewed my own coffee since I was in my teens. My favorite is the "French" roast. And I have always drunk my coffee unadulterated, that is black. (My espresso pot has been, sadly, boxed up for years due to the several relocations.)

I had Brazilian coffee a long time ago. But I have not been able to replicate it enough to be like that coffee brew. But then, just like there is *sweet* tea and *sweet tea*, the difference is in processing.

Unfortunately, the coffees out of those coffee shops are destroyed by the lack of consistency in the equipment and water used to brew the coffee. I avoid much of the Starbucks stuff because I can taste the "pot", for example. The pot should be rinsed completely by cold clean water each time prior to use. And they do forget the grounds holders.

Yes, it is an acquired taste.

I worked with someone once who had a coffee cup with the writing on the side “Is there life before coffee?” Think I will search around the net to see if can find one of those.

My coffee drinking started when I was a young boy. Mom would put 2 teaspoons full in my glass of milk...Boy was I in "seventh heaven," I had "coffee." LOL. I did get in trouble one day when I was about 3 or 4, jumping from chair to chair at the table, when my hand accidentally hit the saucer of a fresh cup of coffee on the table. The cup flew and I got my upper thigh scalded. Wow, huge blisters that the doctor had to cut around. The pain was so bad. I still like a good cup of coffee. When I changed trains at 161st and river ave. in the Bronx I used to stop at Nedicks (bad spelling,) and get a cup which lasted till I got to 23rd st. Walking from the train down to 2nd ave. there was a coffee roasting company, and, in summer, the smell of fresh roasting coffee made me salivate like Pavlov's dogs. "Those were the days..." The beginning of 1954 to the end of 1955. (2 years.)
