The guy in the first picture without the shirt on, I'm guessing weighed about 300 lbs. before sucking it all in after the sudden shock of the frigid water. At least it's for a very good cause.

Thank you Kerry! I have some real 300 pounders in some of the pictures, but I'm trying to just share the flattering views ...

In 2020, the Polar Plunge was one of the last major events the city hosted before the COVID-19 outbreak brought life to a standstill. The 2021 event was held virtually due to the pandemic, though some participants still took a dip in Lake Michigan.

Local WGN legend meteorologist Tom Skilling had the honor of taking the lake’s temperature before the plunge. The thermometer read 42 degrees, but Skilling estimated it was actually around 37 degrees.

With the air and water temperatures both in the 30s, it was certainly chilly. But the smiles, cheering and the cause kept participants going.

That looks a bit cold for my taste. Although I have laid down in the now in only a swim suite but only after heating way up in a hot tub. Thanks for sharing the images.

Great photos and story. It’s unbelievable what some people will do for a great event such as this 🥶. Congrats to all who braved the elements (including the photographer) whom participated in the fund raiser. This is an event that happens in many areas of the world but not usually for a cause such as yours in Chicago. Up here in the Great White North at our winter carnival they cut a hole in the ice and use it as their swimming pool. However I just watch in my long-johns, parka, toque etc from the side lines. Thanks again Paul for another excellent presentation.

Always surprised so few heart attacks, especially after studying the physiques of some of the participants. But okay—for a great cause.

Thank you Ballard, DebAnn, Earnest, Susan, Tim, peekaboo, jliane, Pstrykacz, Jack, Ched49, issa2006! I just added a new post looking at people in costumes. There was an overall individual and group costume contest, the winning group I happened to have several great captures. There were a lot of emergency personnel, including several who were standing in the water for the entire time time (90-minutes) I was present. I think they all had wet suits on.
