It is nice to always list when and where a photo was taken when asking for help identifying flora and fauna. Thanks!

If it were in my back yard here in Colorado I would think it is a male House Finch of the red variation, although a Cassins Finch is similar but it lacks the brown cap on the head of the House Finch. We see lots of House Finchs in the Colorado Mountains but not many Cassins where I live.

I'd go with purple finch as the species, but as far as the name is concerned, it looks kind of like Arnold. He shows up around our place in CT occasionally.

Exactly! Looks just like Arnold!

Definitely a finch. House finch and purple finch are similar, but this looks to be a house finch. I feed them daily here in north central Kentucky.

Photograph and/or see these daily in SE PA... male House Finch. Immature males occasionally have light orange or yellow-orange tinge before they molt to red coloration with the brown striping in the abdomen and sides.

Second poster after OP asked and the answer was Long Island New York. And since it just says "winter bird" I would go with just recently.

I cast my vote with male Purple Finch...

Nope! Came back to change my mind. It looks like a closer match to the house finch. They get mixed up often.

Hard to tell from the photos if it has a dark area on top of it's head which would indicate house finch.
