Every so often the news reports about someone who backed off of a cliff and died trying to get that perfect selfie. I don't recall that ever happening when people weren't trying to be the subject of their own photo.

Very cool shots. That's certainly different from anything I've Done. Fear of Heights and all that....

With over 6.5 billion smartphones active today, safe to say, the digital selfie is probably the most common photograph taken in all of photo history. I took one once about 2 years ago when I got my first smartphone. My wife takes several every week. Teens take about 40 per day, with pouty lips and fingers in a side-ways "V" shape, (just to be unique!)

None of these are selfies if taken before 2002. The word selfie wasn't invented yet. Self Portrait on the other hand has been around for very long time but I guess nobody is doing self portrait any more.

Ha! When I was in Vietnam (1968/1969) I had the ubiquitous Kodak Instamatic with flash cubes - I would say I just dated myself, but the 1968/1969 was a giveaway! - and I was Soldier of the Month for my signal battalion (HHC, 972d Sig Bn, 2d Sig Gp, 1st Sig Bde), so got a 3 day R&R in Vung Tau. One of the nights we had dinner in the R&R Center mess hall and two of my table mates set their 35mm cameras set up on a table across from us, timer set, and took the selfie of all of us. I laughed, held my Instamatic out at arm’s length and took my selfie. Came out okay - I suspect theirs were better!😆

I don't do selfies (or closeup non-selfies) because I don't want the facial distortion created when someone shoves a wide angle lens into someones face and takes a close-up picture. I think these photos are just horrible distortions that are are accepted by many today as great pictures. They are not.

Anyway, since I was a kid I hated posing for pictures. So selfies? Eeeeeeewwwwwww!

I've taken "one" selfie (with a camera on a tripod) in my lifetime and you'll see it in the upper left of this post. I have no further plans for a selfie.

It used to be among many that one did NOT want to be in the photos. Including myself.
Now it is the narcissist mind set of only selfies and the location is secondary.

I didn’t have to BE IN the photos to know I was someplace. I know because I took the photos!

And what’s up with the “pouty lips” and the “fingers in a sideways ‘V’ shape”?

Forty years and 50 pounds ago, I didn't mind having my picture taken; I even have 2 or 3 selfies from that time, taken with using a tripod and timer, and always with a reason to take them. But today, I do everything I can to avoid having my picture taken.

I'm pretty sure that more selfies have been taken with cell phones than all the pictures ever taken with film. There's no way to prove me wrong, so I'm sticking with that statement.

Long before cell phone cameras, I was taking pictures of myself showing the scene around me. I'd hold the camera in front of me and click the shutter, or I'd use the timer or a tripod. Someone coined the term "selfie," but I suspect many of you have been doing the same thing all along.

You are absolutely right. I did take a "selfie" (ugh) of my self on a Colorado mountain top back in the early days of this century. I used a tripod and timer, and I am distant enough in the picture that I actually kept it. Other than that, no. I don't even like to take pictures of other humans unless they are particularly interesting.

I have in my photo archives a picture my father sent back to Denmark of his new bride and himself. The year was 1928 or thereabout. I did a bit of PS to reduce the effect of aging!

I... haven’t mastered the art of the selfie.

I just got my first phone with a camera in it. The first, and probably only selfie I took was accidental as I was trying to figure out how to use the damn thing. I'm so ugly even I get a big laugh at my own expense.

Being a solo traveler most of my SLR days, I'd rarely take a selfie. But every now and again... I used a tripod and 10 second timer, push the shutter release, and run like hell. Worked most of the time but I do have a number of nice ass shots. Luckily my ears worked good back then so I could hear the shutter click most of the time.

These days, still don't take that many, but do appreciate the fully articulated screen on my FZ1000.

You did a good job! They both look relatively young!
