Neither. I look at the overall photo: do I like it? If yes, it's a keeper. I may touch it up here and there afterwards, but I have to like the photo at first glance to keep it.
The original OP asked, "When you look at a photograph..." He did not ask "when you look at your photographs...". It does not seem that he was asking about how you judge your own photos.

That's how I interpreted the question.

I misread the question at first, but on second thought, why would your photos be excluded...they are photos after all.

But not
restricted to your photos. Some have responded with how they look at
their photos only.

When I look at a photograph...
If it is one I took myself, I usually decide quickly if it's a keeper or not.
If I look at a photo someone else took, it's not up to me to decide if it's a keeper or not. However, if it seems the photographer is open to critique or suggestions, I will make suggestions. I try to do that in a positive way, even if the photo is a bad one!
BTW, I rarely look at my own photos within a few days after taking them: after several days I can be much more critical of my own photos!

Like I did. I guess I just like to view others with the thoughts of 1. Is it a subject that is of interest to me.
2. If it is, I then look at what the photographer did that I might try myself. Really good professional photos always pose a challenge to me to do better with mine. Post processing is my biggest challenge and that might be because I didn't get the shots correct in the first place.

When one writes vaguely, wider variations of interpretation are eminent.
(Especially in thread titles..........)
I try to use enough words so there is little room for misinterpretation.
It doesn't
always come out that way though.
I guess people don't like typing a lot of words.

You may be correct, I hate pecking out my thoughts on cellphone using one finger.

YUP, agree with that!
I only use the cell for infrequent messaging and internet when I must and not at home (my computer).
I look at the whole thing at once. Either I like it or not
Have you ever been to an art museum and see a painting you hate? Undoubtedly the painting is in the art museum because others thought it was great or the artist is great. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. The only person who should judge whether the photo is good or not is the one who took the photo. As the old song says, you can't please everyone so you've got to please yourself.

I can like an image (or not) fairly quickly. Analyze for faults? I don't. Consider what "I" may have done differently? Sometimes, but I keep that to myself, for my own edification.
I don't care what the original may look like, just the final (end) result, the one I am viewing.
The posted image is not the image that the photographer made for himself. It’s just a thumbnail. The missing “original” would be much closer to what the photographer would wish a viewer to view.
The thumbnail as posted is dark and lifeless. Sometimes when you view the DL of a dark image it comes to life with some snap and colors that I’m not seeing in the thumbnail ... thus I would not consider my casual comments on the thumbnail to be legitimate critique of the “real version” of that image.

Now who's nit-picking...
Still an image I can view, even without download capability. I'll like it or not.
"fake" versions work also.
