Exactly.
But we all, hopefully, have hundreds of technically bad photos that are perfect. I do going back to mid 1800s of family members.
Yes, we do try to make excellent presentation photos and put them out for critique.
There are snarky ones and there are others giving perspectives we might have not thought of.
Photography, outside of technical, is very subjective including advertising, some of those are big failures as has been seen over time.

So true.

I tend to look at the whole image at first and then begin to break it down.

Great photo!
(Yea, I'm sure some will find a fault.)

No real nit picker would bother unpicking a crude thumbnail.

Oh, they'll nit-pick anything. There HAS to be a fault somewhere.....

Thaz why the word “real” was applied. Guess it shoulda been “really serious”.

FWIW, despite knee jerk compliments there’s evidence of major failings. But without an original there’s no sense in actually critiquing anything.

I can like an image (or not) fairly quickly. Analyze for faults? I don't. Consider what "I" may have done differently? Sometimes, but I keep that to myself, for my own edification.

I don't care what the original may look like, just the final (end) result, the one I am viewing.

When you look at a photograph, do you look for the positive things in the photo first or do you look for things you think need corrected? I guess this is a glass half full or half empty question. Again, just curios.

If I am not drawn to a picture in the first place, I just move on. Anything else is a waste of time unless I am asked for an opinion. Now, if I am looking at my own pictures, then that is a totally different matter.

I don't believe I that I look for either things to praise nor things to criticize. With me, it is does the image draw me in for a longer look or back for another look. The world is full of perfect images that I could care less about but am glad they exist so someone else can enjoy them. Interesting question.

First I look to see if I like it. Then, what do I like about it so that I can try to do it again; after that, I kook to see what isn't so good so that I can learn and improve.

I look at what is needed to make the photo stronger whether it needs cropping, brightening or darkening, sharpening, etc. I guess that means I look at what needs correcting. And I'm a GREAT grandpaw!

Bingo! revhen has it right.

If my first impression is that the image is no good, I don't try to fix it - I delete it. Much like I throw out a loaf of bread that has gone moldy.

Neither. I look at the overall photo: do I like it? If yes, it's a keeper. I may touch it up here and there afterwards, but I have to like the photo at first glance to keep it.

I don't look at photos for the purpose of finding things wrong! but some things stand out like a sore thumb, because of being called over critical I will no longer comment images that are Out of focus, over processed, have appendages "amputated", slanted horizon, crooked buildings Or just plain crap.
However I will make suggestions to the OP in a PM. if I see a potentially good image or good work.
I WILL NOT make "feel good" comments on any image!
