Hi Everyone and Seasons Greetings .
I'm in London England and looking for another camera .
WOW the prices are now sky high , entry level cameras close to £,1000 ( with kit lens )
That $1340 us ... Used cameras are expensive as well .. even beat up ones are going for big money .
Is it the same in other countries ?
Been told it's because of Micro Chip shortages .
Yes, they seem overpriced here in the USA. And many are just floating around on container ships off the coast of my home state California. The chip shortage is messing up delivery of many products. Stay safe over there in the UK.
The prices that we see are in direct relationship to the value of the currency which has lost value so it now takes more of the currency to purchase the same items as before.
They'l be half price come Boxing Day.
I have a hard time paying $500 for a new lawnmower which weighs about 60 pounds.
But no problem paying $1,000 for a new camera which only weighs about one pound?????
The mower mfrs are in the wrong business.

I guess you didn't hear about the new Sony mower/camera. It lets you take 'before and after' pictures of your lawn. It can also compare the colors of your lawn and your neighbor's to see if the grass is greener over there.
Currency exchange rates could be making a difference in some countries. And as new camera prices escalate, it is not unusual for used prices to stay a bit stronger.
They 'dropped' the shutter? How does it work - or are you using that hipster term for 'released'?

I purchase used most of the time and have seen no significant increase in prices.
Seems like as long as people are willing to pay what the market will bear, there's no reason or need to lower the prices. Supply and demand imbalance. I'm willing to wait.
Agree with the comment about currency valuations. The British pound has been on a downward slope against other currencies (including the US dollar and Japanese yen) for several months -- that will absolutely influence import/sale prices.
In 1971 I bought the flagship professional Nikon camera for $360.
$360 in 1971 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $2,470.65 today
A Nikon Z9 body is about $5,500.
The Nikon Z9 is light years ahead of the Nikon F series.
I think your calculations may be off.
Back in the 50's etc. Only my dad worked. Mom was home raising 4 kids plus live-in grandmom.
We bought a house, washer & dryer, cameras, new car, food and clothes, vacations, boyscouts & girlscouts, powertools, garden equipment. Help supported my ho train hobby, as well as my siblings activities.
My dad was a factory worker for airline mfrs.
Today, both have to work and barely make it.
So costs today are out of hand.
I suspect with a chip shortages and limited numbers in production the price around Christmas and New Years have resulted in less sales and higher prices. I've watched the market for the last couple of months and I can assure you a good number of sales last year were considerably cheaper than 2021.
