Hi Everyone and Seasons Greetings .
I'm in London England and looking for another camera .

WOW the prices are now sky high , entry level cameras close to £,1000 ( with kit lens )
That $1340 us ... Used cameras are expensive as well .. even beat up ones are going for big money .

Is it the same in other countries ?
Been told it's because of Micro Chip shortages .

I see no higher or lower prices in the USA, in fact, Nikon dropped it's mechanical shutter in the Z9 flagship and it's now going for a grand less than the D5.

I have not seen any significant change in prices either in this country.

Just wait a while. Prices will probably come back down when no one buys at those prices. My advice is to just be patient.

Cannot answer for other models, but the two most recent camera purchases that I made, the Nikon P-900 and P-1000, are both advertised for considerably higher prices on Amazon than I paid for them when they first came out.

Camera manufacturers make money on high-priced gear. They make close to $0 on low priced gear. Entry of Nikon and Canon into mirrorless, and the imperative that they meet or surpass Sony (which had a seven year head start) has been extremely expensive. And the chips and optics they need are pushing the limits of what is currently possible. That isn't cheap. Also, people seem to be able to pay for the high end gear and willing to wait months to get it. The capabilities of today's high-end cameras and lenses was unimaginable just a few years ago. Lens focusing motor systems of five years ago are not capable of supporting 30fps shutter speeds, and lens resolution that is just sufficient for 24 and 36 megapixel sensors aren't adequate for 50, 60, and 100 megapixel sensors. So in addition to developing new cameras, new lenses--better in every respect--had to be developed. $$$$$ The price of today's camera's will drop when tomorrow's camera's go on sale; but lens prices won't drop as much.

What has happened is that. Entry level cameras are better than past. The very low end has been eliminated by cell phones.

Don't know about cameras, but in US used car prices have gone up 50% compared to 15 ( rough numbers) for new. We traded in a 2 yr old with 40,000 miles on it. New one (Identical model, etc.) $36,000, trade in $29,000. Needed new tires and brakes, 40,000 checkup, etc. So say they put $2000 in it for $31,000. Told they will sell it for $33,000. So new $36 used 33!!
I figure if this continues, next time: I'll get a new car and cash back.

My dad worked for Ford. He would by a new truck every 2 years. He basically got it for free. A plan was 2 percent cheaper than the dealer paid for the new truck. So he always traded 2 years because a low mileage 2year old truck was about the same as he paid for the next one on A plan. Lol.

Yes, we were looking at getting a second car and found used almost what new cost.
Footy on that we can wait.
I also find cameras getting very costly and yes they do more but so does your cell phone for $1,500 which does far more including calls, texts, Facebook and hundreds of other things besides take photos and they fit in a shirt pocket.

Try a company called MPB, based in Brighton, they have a good range of used cameras many in excellent condition - they are all meticulously checked - they also accept your old cameras in part exchange, subject to their scrutiny and if they accept your camera they will off er you a discount on the cost of your new camera.

Nothing has changed in photography in one respect...
Good gear is not cheap...it has always been so.
But what you get today for your coin is nothing short of miraculous.

The chip shortage is hurting everyone. Graphics card prices are ridiculous.
