I've seen certain actors on other shows, surprising because I didn't know that at the time.
I spend a lot of time on IMDB.com looking them up and finding what other shows they were in and what years.

It's amazing how versatile some of them were. And oh those "character actors" whose faces we recognize over and over but didnt know their names or how many things they were in. My (late) next door neighbor was one of those character actors. I knew his name, knew he did bit parts but never knew the breadth of his talent. After his death his wife and I have become good friends. She has a wealth of history. His name was Mickey Jones. If you saw the original National Lampoon "Vacation" he was in it. Played the bearded crazy mechanic in the desert. Also was on Tim Allen "Tool Time" as the drummer from KB Construction.

Cheers to good TV and vintage movies

There must be an episode of "Gilligan's Island" where the professor makes a camera out of a coconut.....

What did you think of the character? Would you have wanted the character removed from the show? How much attention to you pay to cameras/photography on the shows you watch?

Yeah, fire him because the producer wanted him to wear a dirty shirt. That's the ticket. And speaking of shirts, anyone ever notice that The Virginian always wears the same shirt show after show? Trampas too. And in the book (yes, there is a book of the same name), Trampas is a bad guy, not the charater we all know and love from the TV show. <g> Harry PS And no special attention to photography or very little at best.

Back then it was entertainment.
Now it's nitpicker and PC fodder.

Old TV photographers - I'm shocked that no one has mentioned Love That Bob (Robert Cummings)! Seeing him disappear into his studio with a beautiful model once a week probably inspired me in ways I never imagined.

I forgot all about that show. I barely remember it (I'm 62) but I do remember a little. I'll have to see if I can find that one.

Having gotten disillusioned with the offerings of cable, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video I decided to look for some of the shows that I used to love watching years ago. Ideally, I was looking to purchase them or see if I could find another means of watching them. I found The Paper Chase available through Netflix home delivery and am waiting for it to become available and shipped.

The other show I was searching for was Lou Grant. Now as someone who is interested in photography I pay particular attention to "Animal" who is the newspaper's photographer. In the episode I am currently watching (Season 3 Episode 12. Hollywood) Animal is sent to photograph a defunct restaurant that at one time had been very popular. Finally gaining access he sets to work. What caught my attention was the flash photography which was a good trick in this case since he didn't have a flash unit attached to the camera.

In looking up Daryl Anderson I found that the Professional Photographers Association of America wanted the character removed because they felt his less than professional appearance was detrimental to the industry but the National Press Association felt that the character increased an interest in photography among younger people.

A photo of a fire that Anderson took was carried on the AP news service and he, at one time, had an exhibition in an art gallery.

I watched "Lou Grant" back then and recall Animal as a character in the series but not well. I think I saw him as a bit of a rebel and sort of a hippie type. I was into photography but not as much as I am now so did not think much about how he represented photographers. I do recall liking the character.

I can't imagine how a character in ANY TV show, movie, or story would represent an entire group.
They're characters!
That would be like saying all physicists are like Sheldon................

I occasionally recognize an old actor as someone who used to be a young actor. That's especially easy with English actors. Once you're accepted into that brotherhood, you're in for life.

I was in college, studying journalism and was editor of my college newspaper when Lou Grant was on the air. I don't remember anyone thinking the Animal character should be removed! I certainly didn't. If this was what it would be like working for a newspaper, bring it on! But then again, I can't watch any of the old shows from the 70s now without cringing. So much political incorrectness, by today's standards, which I considered to be a result of the National Lampoon-influenced style of humor that was so prevalent.

In 1977 I purchased my first SLR. Since there wasn't an internet for information I wasn't aware of the photography mindset/atmosphere of that time period amongst professional photographers. I thought it would be interesting to hear from photographers who were active in that time to share what it was like.

It's not important since it was over 40 years ago; just idle curiosity.

Way back in the 70's and 80's most movies and TV shows portrayed photographers as serial killers and rapists. Imagine trying to book Senior Portraits after Sonny Crockett arrests a photographer who not only rapes and kills but also deals drugs. Will the photography horror never end? I'm sure it was going on longer. Hollywood in infinite wisdom chose to shoot down the folks that made people want to see their movies. I was trying to remember some movie or show where the cake decorator did it. I'm old, perhaps senile. Damit I forgot what I was trying to say.
