A little FYI about "Animal" the photographer from the tv show Lou Grant?

Having gotten disillusioned with the offerings of cable, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video I decided to look for some of the shows that I used to love watching years ago. Ideally, I was looking to purchase them or see if I could find another means of watching them. I found The Paper Chase available through Netflix home delivery and am waiting for it to become available and shipped.

The other show I was searching for was Lou Grant. Now as someone who is interested in photography I pay particular attention to "Animal" who is the newspaper's photographer. In the episode I am currently watching (Season 3 Episode 12. Hollywood) Animal is sent to photograph a defunct restaurant that at one time had been very popular. Finally gaining access he sets to work. What caught my attention was the flash photography which was a good trick in this case since he didn't have a flash unit attached to the camera.

In looking up Daryl Anderson I found that the Professional Photographers Association of America wanted the character removed because they felt his less than professional appearance was detrimental to the industry but the National Press Association felt that the character increased an interest in photography among younger people.

A photo of a fire that Anderson took was carried on the AP news service and he, at one time, had an exhibition in an art gallery.

What did you think of the character? Would you have wanted the character removed from the show? How much attention to you pay to cameras/photography on the shows you watch?

I don't think we need to worry / want to time travel back to 1977 and seek to cancel a fictional character on a prime-time TV show. As someone also watching the older shows, you might consider a look-up of all the old series you can find on your various free and subscription digital services. See if you can create a 'watch list' or save into a 'Favorites' list so you can find them again. I first thought you were asking about 'Animal' as re-visited on the Geico commercials or my own streaming / rewatching of the Muppets. I've laughed through a few seasons of Columbo too.

In 1977 I purchased my first SLR. Since there wasn't an internet for information I wasn't aware of the photography mindset/atmosphere of that time period amongst professional photographers. I thought it would be interesting to hear from photographers who were active in that time to share what it was like.

It's not important since it was over 40 years ago; just idle curiosity.

PPA has always promoted photography at the highest level, but edgey and artistic, not so much. I’m not surprised their opinion of animal was negative. They have always been a rather conservative organization. I’m glad you reminded me of Animal. I’m going look up the show and check it out again.

Although I always watched "Mary Tyler Moore," I seldom watched "Lou Grant." Given the description you offer, that photographer doesn't bother me a bit, and I'm surprised that the photo group wanted him removed. This was a TV show, a comedy. It wasn't an instructional series about photography.

People like to look for things to pretend to get upset about.

NOT removed.

That would be like removing "Dentist" from Little Shop Of Horrors because some dentists found it offensive.

It's "Hollywood!"

The only thing I ponder about old shows of years gone by is looking up the actors to see if they are still alive and how much mileage they got out of their bodies since actors traditionally have used and abused themselves partying, multiple spouses, or dying prematurely. Wikipedia and FindAGrave have become my friend for obtaining the info on old actors. I find the western genre to be of particular interest since most of the hardcore western actors back then smoked like trains and very few made it out of their 60's. Puff puff pass. LOL
