I was new to photography at the ripe old age of 67, signed up for a beginning class at our local community college, had to withdraw after one class when my husband had a severe stroke, which is still taking some of my time, but I am determined to reclaim some of my life…..Saw the sale on Phlearn and wondering if anyone can comment on the value of it, good or bad…..I am most interested in the Adobe product instructions…..thanks in advance for any comments.

I think it's 6 of one half a dozen of another. Given all the names of those who have tutorials on YouTube. Pick one that feels right and go with him or her. For me, it's about the style of presentation.

I found Anthony Morganti on YouTube to be an excellent resource for both PS and LR.

Go with free. You do not have to spend anything to learn Adobe and learn it well.

I got a bit of a late start, too, Marcia, starting in my late 50's. No clubs near me, and no other photographers that I knew of. Someone I met while traveling out west told me about UHH, so I joined. That got me started on finding out what all I didn't know, lol. Once I progressed to using Adobe's Lightroom, I got hooked on Anthony Morganti's tutorials. There have been other worthwhile instructors that I have watched, but Morganti does a good job of breaking the process down into a logical progression of baby steps, so to speak.

marciamyers have you considered joining Facebook and Instagram photography groups?
While on-line learning has it's merits it pales in the face of actual hands on experience with other like minded.
Ask any career educator about the merits of in person learning... For that matter ask virtually any school age kid today in the era of "Social Distancing" about how the enjoy "distance learning" enough said.

Please share what genre you are interested in pursuing... That can be paramount in understanding on how to best field your query. I am primarily a Fashion and Beauty genre photographer as such I've joined IG and Facebook "Groups" focused on same. As an example I belong to a local FB group "Virginia Model Photography."
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1486792438245814/

Within this group there is a constant stream "Meet and Greets" of folks wishing to learn and advance their skill set.
Likewise I belong to several Instagram Groups focused on portraiture, beauty and fashion.
That said there are countless other "Groups" on these Social Media platforms on a myriad of genres and nearly all members are very congenial.

Sadly this stands in stark contrast to many "Photographers" sites where yes indeed far too many members tend to be "rather snobby" UHH is a mixed bag... lots of congenial folks here and unfortunately there are also rather snobby ones to (the takeaway is anytime members can hide behind anonymity they lose concern about Social Etiquette) Here on UHH this unfortunately has become an issue thus I encourage you to pursue your desire to learn/master photography on major Social Media site also.

Btw on the major Social Media platforms inappropriate members are quickly remove.

Please give your husband my very best wishes for a rapid and full recovery... Outcomes are constantly improving as medial knowledge in this field is growing considerably.

Hope springs eternal... Cheers! And happy Holidays marciamyers!

Thanks, I will look into the social media aspect….I have been away from photography for a few years after only a slight beginning, so I cannot predict where my interests will go but as of now I think nature (birds, wildlife, with a touch of landscape) street photography, and macro. .. definitely not at all interested in portraits. Happy Holidays to you also, and everyone here!

I have watched Phlearn on You Tube and I have learned some techniques. However, I suggest that you look at Matt Kloskowski (MattK.com) and his courses which are also on sale. I have a number of Matt's tutorials and follow him on You Tube. Also, try Anthony Morganti, his You Tubes are superb. Another good instructor is Blake Rudis at f/64.

My suggestion is to start watching some of the You Tubes an decide whose teaching style you like.

The discounts are nice but only if the teaching style and material offered works for you. BTW, I think that MattK offers a full refund within 30 days of purchase.

This is a good suggestion. i have watched all of them at one time or another. Matt K and Morganti do a good job of simplifying, but geez, their pace is so slow I wind up either skipping ahead or falling asleep. I have used Phlearn before and they move it along. I often have to go back and rerun the tape. One thing I do like, is they make the file available for download, so you can split screen, stop the video and simultaneously work on the image while following their instructions.

I have use Phlearn for 5 years. I subscribed for a pretty reasonable price for an annual subscription. He is easy going and easy to follow. I also like Matt K. Met him at a photo seminar, very knowledgeable and explains things nicely. Others I have followed are Matt Grainger and Scott Kelby. Also very good.

Another excellent photographer to watch is Joe Edleman. He is on you tube. I've attended his workshops and seen him at photo conferences. His motto is "I shoot people" most excellent teacher. Please check him out. He also has a weekly program on YouTube.

Phlearn has a number of free tutorials that you could watch and decide if you want to go on from there

Thank you, there is a photography club about 30 miles from here….I went once but the only two people I met had degrees in photography, 30 years experience, and were rather snobby about it so I never went back. At the time I knew little to nothing but I could check it out again. At least now I know enough to say I don’t know, where as then they may have well been speaking in tongue.

A photography club is a good place to learn and practice, get critiques and advice, plus have opportunities to be mentored by others. There may be some members who have a lot of photographic experience but less teaching experience, and others who are the opposite good teachers but not as experienced photographically. You can learn from both.

Give the club another chance, you may meet some very nice people there. I joined one a couple years ago and have learned a lot from the members. I even had two photos, which I did not think were exceptional or really that good, chosen for a photograph exhibit at a local University. Unfortunately the pandemic has postponed (maybe even cancelled) it for now. You can make new friends and that can help motivate you to get out and take photos, a very important activity.

Best of luck to you in your search for more education, and keep shooting photos.
