I was new to photography at the ripe old age of 67, signed up for a beginning class at our local community college, had to withdraw after one class when my husband had a severe stroke, which is still taking some of my time, but I am determined to reclaim some of my life…..Saw the sale on Phlearn and wondering if anyone can comment on the value of it, good or bad…..I am most interested in the Adobe product instructions…..thanks in advance for any comments.

I have watched Phlearn on You Tube and I have learned some techniques. However, I suggest that you look at Matt Kloskowski (MattK.com) and his courses which are also on sale. I have a number of Matt's tutorials and follow him on You Tube. Also, try Anthony Morganti, his You Tubes are superb. Another good instructor is Blake Rudis at f/64.

My suggestion is to start watching some of the You Tubes an decide whose teaching style you like.

The discounts are nice but only if the teaching style and material offered works for you. BTW, I think that MattK offers a full refund within 30 days of purchase.

There is so much free material available on YouTube, that you might want to look there first. Lynda.com has excellent instruction. You pay by the month, and their entire inventory is available to you. They cover photography and almost everything else.

I'm sure members have offered other instructors.

I have never used/investigated PHLearn, but I do like Laura Shoe's Lightroom training as it is how I originally learned Lr. Her DVDs/downloads run about $100, but are sometimes on sale. Happy Holidays to ALL!

I second Jerry's suggestion. But(!), it had a buyout and a name change to LinkedIn Learning. And, you probably don't have to pay. Many, maybe most, public libraries provide access at no charge.

".I am most interested in the Adobe product instructions"

Adobe has "doubled down" on tutorials the last couple years. All of their creative apps have links to a vast collection of tutorials through the help menus.

In addition to your online learning you should consider signing up for that community college class again. It is always nice to have a person right there to answer your questions and even give a little one on one assistance.

I wanted a "kick in the pants" to get out and start shooting again and the local community college had a beginners class so I took it. I didn't need a beginners class because I've been shooting since the 70's but the instructor has been shooting even longer than I have plus he worked for the local newspaper so he had a lot of good information. Hopefully, the intermediate class will have enough participants in January so I will be taking that to help "keep my pants kicked".

Also, is there a photography club in your area? You would meet and learn from photographers from all levels. I have been looking but have found that I will have to drive to another town since there are none here.

Best wishes for great success on your photography journey!!

Thank you, there is a photography club about 30 miles from here….I went once but the only two people I met had degrees in photography, 30 years experience, and were rather snobby about it so I never went back. At the time I knew little to nothing but I could check it out again. At least now I know enough to say I don’t know, where as then they may have well been speaking in tongue.

The closest one to me is 32 miles so I understand about making the trek. I will look into it more after the first of the year. You'll have to let me know how it goes for you.

Adobe is a great way to learn...and there are a TON of free tutorials out there.

Get to know your camera and lens...shoot anyway...just shoot.
A lot of what you need to know will become intuitive by simply getting out there...

If you know what kind of photography you are interested in... wildlife, portrait, landscape etc...
Once you know your basics...
Take a workshop...pay the coin and get a live instructor out there with you in the field.
A few hours can save you months of you tubing...
