I agree - platitudes are worthless if one wants to improve.

On the other hand - someone posted an example recently attempting to illustrate diffused lighting and no shadows - and none of the images posted reflected the narrative. I pointed that out, and the poster became snarky and called me a snob. Some people have paper thin egos and are just too invested in their own work to be able to hear criticism.

No one like destructive criticism, but some don't even like (can't handle) constructive criticism as it goes against their thoughts and feelings.

If I post in the gallery it's because I think others may like the shot.
If they do, they do,
if they don't, they don't.
No skin off my back.

Hi all Hog's. I have a question and please don't take it the wrong way. When people post photos on here, a lot of people say (excellent photo, great shot, etc. ) My question is should we be honest and tell them what is actually wrong with the photo. Not in focus, too much noise, not a good comp etc. I really want to know as I see some photos all the time and want to say something but don't. When I post photos mostly in the sports topic I want honest critique of my photos. Thanks for your responses. BE SAFE!!

When I see a photo that does not ring my bell I say nothing. All images are subjective and my taste is unique to me and I should not judge others by it.

No! Many people who posted don't want to hear bad things about their images. To them they represent their best works and look good to them.

Many people avoid posting negative comments which is not helpful to the person who captured the image. However, there are also people on this site who regularly give unbridled praise to images that are mediocre at best. I believe that many of these folks simply don't know a good image from a bad one, and often their own images are just as mediocre as the ones they are praising.

I don't agree. Those of us who have honed are skills over the years know a poorly captured image when we see one, even if we choose not to criticize it or even comment on it.

While I agree with most of your post, the question remains of whether the “shadowless” example/discussion was in the gallery section.

If indeed it occurred in the gallery section, even though you may have been correct to remark that it was wrong, the idea of doing so in the gallery section is improper.

The gallery section is a sorry wasteland of platitudes, bad advice, and mostly rather mediocre images. There’s simply no point in correcting anything. Denizens of the gallery section like it just the way it is, and there’s no fixing that. Gallery section culture is what it is ... sad but true. Just let sleeping dogs lie.

No, actually it was right here. The poster was using his examples to make a point - fallacious at best. The OP was looking for advice on proper use of a speed light to achieve good lighting. And the response failed on all counts.

The gallery section is not for critique. Replies are limited to “great shot” and “nice color” etc etc. Thoughtful commentary is not welcome.

Not true. Minor critiques are welcome if the poster requests it. There are other areas for more in depth comments. Lately there seem to be as many photos posted in the discussion section as in the photo gallery.

Thaz the Gallery section for sure. Knee jerk compliments for anything vaguely resembling a photograph is the rule.

OTOH the Critique section is not that sort of mediocrity worship. There’s plenty of mediocrity but honest critique is expected ... with a half spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down ;-)

For that to happen the section would need proper moderating. At the moment, all it has is three absentee moderators.

It is often difficult to provide a response that I won't regret later.

If folks post Gallery shots in Analysis, with no directive, then I try my best to post the first thing that comes into my head 😅🙃

When a child gives you a rock you praise them because it’s the only rock they have and it’s the act that counts. Don’t treat photographers like children. We see a photo and we have our opinions and can post them because comments are allowed. Success comes when you know what failure is so you don’t repeat it again and again. End of rant.

This reminds me of the time a pal and I were finding fossils (and a few bits of arrowhead tossed in) all over the place and his maybe 6-year-old came to us with a bland looking rock, for which he got due praise. For no good reason, I banged it on another rock to reveal a perfect shell fossil, best find of the day.

I heard. I wonder how much time it takes? I was also thinking of a travel section. But I’m reluctant to commit. Any ideas?
