Hi all Hog's. I have a question and please don't take it the wrong way. When people post photos on here, a lot of people say (excellent photo, great shot, etc. ) My question is should we be honest and tell them what is actually wrong with the photo. Not in focus, too much noise, not a good comp etc. I really want to know as I see some photos all the time and want to say something but don't. When I post photos mostly in the sports topic I want honest critique of my photos. Thanks for your responses. BE SAFE!!

The Gallery is primarily for display, unless critique is explicitly requested.
Some categories are for explicit help/questions with an image, others, simply for display.
In the display categories, a request to critique should be included with the post.

To what forum category(ies) are you referring?

If someone wants a critique, they will ask for it. If someone doesn't, they are posting because they are proud of their image, so if you don't like it, keep your thoughts to yourself. People scorned Van Gogh.

Not taken the wrong way, just trying to explain things.

Hey I am not an expert, been shooting awhile and still learning everyday. Didn't think it through enough I guess, most likely people would ask for advise/critique if they wanted it. Thanks BE SAFE!!

When a child gives you a rock you praise them because it’s the only rock they have and it’s the act that counts. Don’t treat photographers like children. We see a photo and we have our opinions and can post them because comments are allowed. Success comes when you know what failure is so you don’t repeat it again and again. End of rant.

And one of mine, for myself - Except for the capture of something extraordinary, never post anything but your best.

What we have here is a failure to communicate.

I don't make many replies for several reasons.

The picture is ok, but not great.
A number of responders have already said anything I could say.
I can't think of a positive sandwich.

A positive sandwich begins with a specific positive point about what is being evaluated. This is followed by no more than three suggestions for improvement. These are best expressed by, "Have you thought about...", "Can you bring out more detail in...", etc. Finally, point out a second positive characteristic.

There are a few members that post many images of so-so quality at best, and I avoid making any comments to not encourage them. Some do it just to raise their starter rank (IMHO) posting the same image multiple time over a couple of months. I am also not sure of the source, if its original. I have seen images clearly from a TV/monitor and at least one that appeared to be from a magazine.

In any case use comments to encourage someone that is starting and needs advice. When making the comment let the OP know exactly what you find appealing.

Photo Analysis is the place to post for actual critique/criticism/evaluation - you know, as in a learning experience, or satisfying your masochistic needs. 👹👹👹
