Thanks for the information but my main reason is that I don't think I ever want to to on a cruise. I think it would be boring.

I think for some people it would be boring, but for others it is just right. I work the ships in Juneau, Alaska. Most of my guests say they are having a great time on the ships and are thrilled to be somewhere. The tours I do are long, five hours dock to dock, and by the end my guests get to know me pretty well and some will start to confide in me. Thats when I hear that some are bored on the ships and some are living the dream. Personally I would rather go somewhere, rent a car, get a B&B and explore the area, but most people don't want to do that.

Since I'll bet all of us here would have a camera with you when you were on your last cruise ship, has any on here been on a cruise ship lately?

In Juneau we would normally get three to six ships everyday during the summer season. None last year and a very short season this year, starting about mid August with just a few ships. There were Covid cases in Juneau during this time but they didn't come from the ships. The ships and all the shore excursions they offered, including a tour I lead, operated under very strict protocols. It worked. It kept us safe and made the tours possible. The last ship left October 20th after about twenty ship days (normal summer about 130 ship days) and everything went just fine. You're probably safer on a ship, with all the testing, than in a local restaurant where you don't know who's at the next table.

I'm always afraid I won't have my camera/telephoto when I spot that UFO 200 yards away.

Sorry, I wouldn't get anywhere near a cruise ship without a very large payment for incentive. Otherwise, no reason to stay in a floating jail.

Aircraft carriers are fascinating but also a place with many very dangerous jobs!

You can't lump all cruise ships together in one category. River cruises are very different from sailing on large "Vegas hotel on a barge" cruise ships. Small ship cruises are a different category again. Ships like the RMS Queen Mary, especially on the North Atlantic crossings, retain some of the characteristics of the old liners. And of course what you see and do depends largely on where the ship is going!

Talking about ship, camera and aircraft carrier. I have never been on an aircraft carrier but back 46 years ago in late April 1975 I was flying the Vietnam Airforce Huey UH-1H following the Air America Huey out to sea. We kept following them until we had less fuel that we could get back to shore before we could see anything we could land on. But we kept following them and we finally landed on the USS Mt. Vernon. That night they transferred us to an charter cargo ship. I stayed on the deck for the full 10 days we were out at sea. We docked at the Phillipines but they didn't allow us to get ashore. We finally reached Guam island after 10 days and many of the days were full of rain and storm and I was on the deck. Well I don't think it was fun time but it sure was much more interesting than any cruise I can go. I didn't have a camera but if I did those images would be of much value to me compared to any I could take on a cruise.

Earlier I commented about our tours coming off safely. Just to clarify, all that positive stuff being said, I wouldn’t get on a cruise ship for any reason.

The last ship I was on was 49 years ago and was not a cruise ship, it belonged to the US Navy. Yes I had my camera with me. It was not a digital of course, but it was a SLR and I have the photos to prove it.

Interesting history, Bebu. I spent many hours on naval ships (in a civilian capacity), including overnight sea trials on a carrier (USS Ranger). I love ships of all types. Modern cruise ships are ugly behemoths compared to the great liners of the past but they are still interesting to me.

I have been on many cruises. At first I took a DSLR with 2 kit lenses. After a while it got very cumbersome to carry all of that gear. I am 73 years old and it got to be too much. I sold the DSLR and bought a Sony Cybershot DSC RX10 m 3 It is a 1” sensor with a 24-600 mm f2.4 w to f4.0 tele. It has been replaced by the m4. It has a little bit better focusing mode. The camera itself is a little bit big(almost as big as a dslr) but it has the big zoom and the 1” sensor that makes it good resolution wise. It makes it so you don’t need to carry around a lot of lenses and takes great photos. Take a look at it. It is a little bit expensive for a point and shoot but it makes a big difference as far as carrying around a lot of gear. Also get a theft proof camera strap to make it safer to travel with! Pac safe makes a good one. Good luck! Have fun!

Good, stay away. Let my wife and I enjoy the ride without the crowd.

Yes, we toured Iceland in June on Viking, a trip every one should do. Because I went specifically for Puffins I took my D850 and Nikon 500 PF lens. I also took my Nikon 24-120.
For our thermal Spa I took my Nikon AW130. My wife took my favorite camera of all time, the Sony HX99, simply the best pocket camera ever made.

always loved this shot Bill.

Millions do cruising each year and most enjoy it. I have done a few and loved them. Sure there are new restrictions and procedures to endure now with covid, but as others have said, if you do your best to stay safe, then just do it.

I dont have any planned right now, the last one was a Carnival cruise through the Western Caribbean that I took my then 93 year old mom on as a birthday gift, and we both loved it.

I have owned timeshares on the Caribbean island of Sint Maarten/St. Martin since 1990 and spend weeks at a time there and visiting other islands, but it was still nice to be pampered, entertained , wined and dined aboard and off ship.

On our last cruise with my mom, I took less photos than I normally do on a vacation as I was attending to sharing fun with my mom, but I took my Sony A7RIV and a few lenses and made some fun shots and videos. Also had my smartphone as a backup.

I always have a camera of some sort with me everywhere. In five decades of photography I have made countless great shots that I would have missed without having a camera with me at all times.

Cheers

I've been on at least a half dozen Caribbean cruises, a cruise in Alaska, Galapagos, the Baltic, and a Viking river cruise on the Rhine. I loved every one of them, and thought the Viking cruise was spectacular. I will definitely be doing more Viking cruises once the pandemic is behind us, but for now a cruise is off the table for me.
