Work in progress. Beginning to realize that my equipment is not holding me back in any way. Maybe in the past? But definitely not now. So, group 1 in rear view, group 2 still ahead.

If and when I “discuss” photography, I just follow along with what the other finds important.

I found out, decades ago, that most folks who use cameras do not seek improvement or proficiency, but ego gratification.

So, a few “oos” and “ahs” at whatever new bauble or photo they think is the cat’s pajamas and the conversation can move smoothly to something else.

We’ll, at least in that group you’ll never go hungry.

I have always tried to use a well-rounded approach.

If you are photographing people all you have to photograph is your interaction

The master has deleted more images than the beginner has ever taken.

I don't worry about those things. I will always be a beginner. I have had a camera in my hands since I was 10. I'm 84. I should stick to painting, but I firmly believe that beginners are allowed to love photography as much as masters do...

Definitely.
Some simply go about it differently.

I don't think masters are obsessed though.

I don't think they are either. I think they just try to do the best they can with what they have. They want things to be beautiful and a few actually get it done... and many THINK they do.

I recently watched an interview with a professional photographer. Unfortunately, I didn't note who it was but my money would be placed on Daniel Milnor. The statement was made that beginners and beginning amateurs tend to focus on/discuss equipment. Advanced amateurs and professionals tend to focus on concepts/techniques. So, as the question was posed in the title, in which group are you?

Uhhhh, huuuuhhhh. Especially the Nikonists and the Canonista's! and the Mirror haves and the Mirror LESStas.

But where the the Expose to the lefters? And teh Raw vs JPEG--ers?

I miss Sharpie's Composition treatises. If it was Milnor, he's be sure to emphasize telling a story, and printing your work.

Concepts/techniques. Then We share Photoshop tips. Then we share client experiences and laugh while having a few beers or more.

I think it's valid for beginners to focus on equipment. If I was going to get involved with a new activity, I would want to get the best gear I could afford. I've gotten to the point where my D750 is good for me, and I'm not looking to update/upgrade.

Anyone remember Ansel Adams spouting about equipment? First the Artist, then the gear, then the darkroom. But without the first the rest can be useless.

For those obsessed with equipment: I recently saw a magazine (I think it was from either Audubon Society or Wildlife) with their annual photo contest winners and there was a new category for cell phone photos. Now, I know this has been an on-and-topic for quite a while on UHH, and I don't mean to start another argument over cell vs camera, but the entries were nothing short of spectacular. I can only suggest that the quality of in-camera images will be converging between the two technologies given the rapid advances of the cell manufacturers. It will then be the up-front skills and maybe the PP that will separate the two camps.
