I enlisted in the Navy because I wanted to travel. You know the Navy has ships and goes to different countries? When I got out of boot camp, they sent me to a photographic squadron in FL (NAS Cecil Field). This squadron (VFP-62)would send detachments of about 35 enlisted and 4 officers with planes with each carrier homeported on the East Coast. I thought I would make a MED cruise on an aircraft carrier. Then they found out that I could type. They put me in the disbursing office, and I never saw a ship. All my buddies went on 6 month MED cruises, and all I did was wave goodbye to them. However, shore duty in FL is not all that bad.
My squadron took the low-level photos of the Cuban missle sites in 1962. Read about it in the book 'Blue Moon Over Cuba'. Order it on Amazon, it is a good read.

You may have served in combat, or non-combat. You may have retired, or served for a short time. You may have been a draftee, or you may have volunteered. You may have served in the Corps, the Army, the Air Force, the Navy, or the Merchant Marine. But you served. You did your job honorably. And for that, I am proud to call you "Brother". You may have served in WW II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Iraq, or Afghanistan, or some other foreign place. But you served. You have a DD214, with the words "Honorably Discharged". Two of the most noble words in the world. And I am proud of each and every one of you. I was not a hero, but I am proud and happy to have served among them. Today is "Band of Brothers Day". To each of those who touched my life, here's to you.
Happy Brothers Day.
You may have served in combat, or non-combat. You ... (show quote)
