Ordering from Nikon vs. Adorama, B&H, KEH
I still have a large well stocked local store about 30 miles from my home. I would buy it there. I wish the owner is a bit nicer to his customers.

If you have a problem with a order or item, Adorama and B&H are very responsive. It is true that problems are rare but they do happen.
Years ago I had an item that was not functional. Adorama sent me a new one BEFORE they received my return. I suspect the process would be slower with Nikon.
I prefer dealing with a dealer, rather than the factory.

Taxes? Shipping cost / vendor? Shipping duration, such as 2-day vs random ground? Return policy and shipping cost, such a prepaid to vendor? Frequent buyer points? Old equipment trade-in discount?
Important considerations! And here is another: you will find that b/c of its size B@H provides the most reliable service: they always have the item you need, they ship it the same hour they receive payment, and provide the best service if something goes wrong. I am not partial to B@H but be sure to look for this services elsewhere.

Get a B and H credit card and pay no taxes.

B&H 'credit card'.
I tried getting a Payboo card, was such a PIA I told them to shove it! YMMV

Everyone should read this before using the Payboo credit card.
https://appleinsider.com/deals/bh-payboo-cardThe interest rate is 29.99% APR, and you do not get the state tax refund in all states. If you're going to pay off the purchase in a month or two, you'll come out ahead. If not, you'll pay Synchrony Bank that interest on the unpaid balance, and they're obviously counting on people carrying a balance.
A couple of years ago I applied for a payboo card touting an 800+ credit score. I was turned down. The main reason, I think, was that we pay our cc bill off every month. They undoubtedly knew that. Synchrony would lose $ on every purchase in this case.

They are actually quite very easy to get. No PIA, just LOL.
I recommend buying from 1. Local dealer if possible (Help keep them in business so you have a local expert and a place where you can hold new gear before buying) 2. On-line from Adorama, B & H, Hunts, etc and finally 3. Direct from Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc.
For example, if a camera sells at $2,000 and costs $1,500 to manufacturer, when you purchase from 1 or 2 above, maybe $250 in profit goes to the local dealer or on-line seller and $250 goes to the manufacturer (Nikon, etc). But if you buy direct from Nikon the whole $500 profit goes to Nikon. None of the profits stay in the local or national economy. (All numbers are for example only and do not represent actual data.)
So again, I encourage shopping locally if possible.
I order from B&H using their credit card. The invoice includes CA sales tax, and the credit card applies the tax amount as a credit. Thus I am legal in CA on paying the tax but I save that amount. B&H pays CA, this reflects their long policy of no sales tax for the customer.
Real savings on large purchase, like a Z9.

I didn't try but I have my score at 800+ because I paid off my balance every month. So they would give the card to those who have bad credit? They count on the fact that you won't make your payment in the grace period so they can get their interest? So it makes sense for me to buy local. The local stores actually priced a few bucks lower than B&H. Of course they collect the state tax.
I try to support my local camera store even though I pay Florida sales tax but I respect their effort as a small business. Otherwise, I prefer B & H for their consistent customer service.
Always support your local camera store if you have one. They are disappearing too fast. Even paying tax the service is worth it. I see on this site too many local stores closing. I am lucky to have Service Photo in my area and have made all my major purchases from them since the 90's.
