I think I agree. Experimenting is good. I do it all the time just to see what happens.
No contest. Number 2 is better in many ways. Along with less sharpening it also has better color and contrast. I'm reasonably certain it would be a better print version as well. I am in the opposite camp on the sky however. I think you need a little more sky. The photo seems out of balance with the thin ribbon of sky. And if you tried to crop it all out you would have to give those trees a top heavy haircut.

i always prefer the brighter of the two.
I like #1 overall but would suggest darkening the sky similar to the sky in #2.
