You should add that nobody should buy a new car until the one they own can't get them to where they are going.

What a lot of BS from a bunch of people who think they can take it with them.

I agree about cameras. Cars are a different issue.

I have a 2013 car with only 50K miles. It will probably last longer than I will. However, it does not have the newer safety features. At my age, I need all the safety help that I can get.

I will be getting a new car as soon as the supply issue clears up. Hopefully, I won't need the safety features before then.

The only thing tempting me to upgrade is the desire for a tilting screen, as my knees increasingly object when I squat for a low angle shot. I have a compact that has it, so I know what I'm missing with my DSLRs. I want a tilty screen! (not fully articulating...hate those)

Exactly!! New gear is cool. If you really want it and can afford it, get it. Life is short. Enjoy.

And for me I would be happy with any car I ever owned if it's still working. I bought new (or replacement car) when the one I had didn't run any more.
And yes if I don't have money to spare I won't buy camera but I would try and borrow left and right to have a car.

These types of threads are fairly pointless...

Everyone will justify their own actions...every time.
Those that want to spend...will spend.
Those that don't...won't.

I spend, but certainly could not possibly care less if you do...or not.

Cameras are like wives. There is always a new one out there to get your attention. But in the end they all have the same basic features and do the same thing. Replacing them can be costly. I try to hang on to them as long as possible. My first one lasted 9 years. The second one lasted 20 years and cost a bundle to replace. The third one will most likely be my last. As I get older I find I don't use all the available features near as much. I think it's only good to upgrade when they don't meet your need or if it dies.

I'm all for fallacious arguments if they support my desire to buy something I don't really need.

I upgrade whenever I feel like it for whatever reason I please, as long as I can scrape up the dough. I don't give a rat's ass what anyone else thinks about, and I don't need to "justify" it. Nor do I ask anyone else's permission.

Which would put a lot of people out of work. Is that a good thing also?

How often do you "upgrade" your car? I still drive the car that I bought new in 2002. It still gets me there.

Cameras, different story. Would I still use the same camera I used 20 years ago? The difference is that imaging technology has advanced exponentially over the past 20 years. The current generation of mirrorless cameras is so superior to anything that came before that I could not imagine going back.

So upgrades are good, if they offer real improvement.

Yes! My cars are not new, but we’ll taken care of and if you buy quality they last and don’t look dated 10 years later. (My 2008 BMW X5 will be with me for quite a while longer). However, love my new camera and will continue to update as they continue to improve eye tracking!

All driven by personal opinion and desires.

(Some can't decide though.)

My cars and trucks are not new. I take care of them to the extent that I want them to last. I am not particularly concerned with appearances, only with utility and safety. In the case of trucks, they get beaten up with use. It's because they're dedicated to work conditions. What do I care what they look like when I'm finished with them? By that point they will not be of any use to anyone because I'm not finished with them until they no longer work. They have no value.

My cars have scratches on them. Same comment applies. When I'm done with them it will be because they no longer work.

The cars and trucks will have no value as a car or truck. They will have a value as parts (in most cases). I will donate them to some charitible organization and get a tax deduction for the minimal value as parts.

I was reading an article titled: “Should you upgrade?”

My hackles rose immediately. My reaction was hell no!!! (less polite than in the title).

The article presented a mixed bag of yes/no, but really was pushing toward 'Yes'.

The two arguments toward a 'yes' are simple:
► The stuff does not work for any reason that cost more than the rice of a new item that is more performant
► The stuff is inadequate for a series of given situation.

Everything else is simple fallacious arguments that appeals only to folks who do not care about $$$ and those that care more about 'stuff' than anything else.
