I was reading an article titled: “Should you upgrade?”

My hackles rose immediately. My reaction was hell no!!! (less polite than in the title).

The article presented a mixed bag of yes/no, but really was pushing toward 'Yes'.

The two arguments toward a 'yes' are simple:
► The stuff does not work for any reason that cost more than the rice of a new item that is more performant
► The stuff is inadequate for a series of given situation.

Everything else is simple fallacious arguments that appeals only to folks who do not care about $$$ and those that care more about 'stuff' than anything else.

If you can't buy 'stuff' what good is money?

I have always sustained that an upgrade should be done when our camera fails to do what we need from it. AF performance comes to mind for those into action or wildlife. The same goes with a lens.
Old cameras but especially for the landscape photographer do not need to be replaced, go for a better lens instead.

If what you want and makes you happy is to burn money then why not.

If its just a question of money or more stuff ... go outside, sit a while, take a picture, repeat.

I have upgraded my gear four or five times. Each time I had a reason excuse.

Since I retired I have not upgraded anything except software.

AGREED!! I have posted a couple times on why most honestly have no need to upgrade. It's simple actually. Most of us have cameras that are capable of doing more than we are. When I can do more than my D5oo I'll upgrade. Most likely I'll die with it. Lol.

You should add that nobody should buy a new car until the one they own can't get them to where they are going.

What a lot of BS from a bunch of people who think they can take it with them.

My camera can do something I don't need nor want but it never more capable than I am. Newer cameras always have features that I can make use of.
With that said, when I bought the camera I decided that it would be enough for me so I do not upgrade regardless of what becomes available later on. If would never buy a camera thinking that it's ok for now I would get a better one later.

How often do you "upgrade" your car? I still drive the car that I bought new in 2002. It still gets me there.

Cameras, different story. Would I still use the same camera I used 20 years ago? The difference is that imaging technology has advanced exponentially over the past 20 years. The current generation of mirrorless cameras is so superior to anything that came before that I could not imagine going back.

So upgrades are good, if they offer real improvement.

I do not upgrade cars but I do replace cars much more often than cameras. I use the car until it no longer economically to keep repairing it. If the car is in good shape I would never buy another one. My newer cars tend to be lesser than the old ones it replaced.

I didn't really need to know this. It was just meant as an example for some upgrades being meaningful and some being wasteful. It also clearly matters how often and for what purpose you use your car, and your camera. I for my part get no joy out of driving a car, as long as it gets me to the airport so I can go out into the world to take pictures with my state-of-the-art camera.

What I mean is that don't compare cars to cameras. They are different. Car is a must have and camera is something we want not something we have to have unless we are the pros.
